Series Statement: California studies in 19th century music 9
Content: As never before or since, the life and works of Richard Wagner dominated American music-making at the close of the nineteenth century. Europe, too, was obsessed with Wagner, but - as Joseph Horowitz shows in this first history of Wagnerism in the United States - the American obsession was unique
Content: Wagner himself predicted that the New World would prove especially receptive to his operas and ideas, and he was right. The conductor Anton Seidl (1850-1898) was his crucial New World emissary, a priestly and enigmatic central figure in New York's musical life - and the central figure in Wagner Nights. Though acclaimed in Europe as Wagner's closest protege, Seidl became an American citizen
Content: Seidl's own admirers included the women of the Brooklyn-based Seidl Society, who wore the letter "S" on their dresses. For wives whose husbands were away making money, and whose own professional possibilities were suppressed by contemporary mores, Seidl's performances offered the intense emotional release of Sieglinde's ecstatic pregnancy and Isolde's orgasmic love-death. At the Metropolitan Opera, according to the Musical Courier, the audience "stood on their chairs and screamed their delight for what seemed hours." In the summers, Seidl conducted fourteen times a week at Brighton Beach, on Coney Island

Edition: 20th anniversary edition
    ISBN: 9780199392421 , 9780199392414
Content: Ian Bradley's "Complete Annotated Gilbert and Sullivan" has established itself across the world as the authorized and definitive 'Bible' for all those interested in the Savoy operas. Originally published in two Penguin paperbacks in the 1980s, a single-volume comprehensive compendium, hailed widely as "easily the best annotated Gilbert & Sullivan available" (Gayden Wren, New York Times) was published by Oxford University Press in 1996. This brand new 20th anniversary edition includes Thespis, Gilbert and Sullivan's first collaboration which is now being increasingly performed, despite the loss of the vocal and orchestral scores. It also features a completely new introduction, reflecting on the state of Gilbert and Sullivan nearly 150 years after the pair began their legendary collaboration, and new annotations addressing recent performance history, newly discovered 'lost' songs and dialogue, and, for the first time, Gilbert and Sullivan references in contemporary popular culture. Scholars, performers, and fans are sure to rejoice in this indispensable companion to the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire, newly updated for the present day.

Content: "The path to living as one’s authentic self is paved with trials and tribulations in this revelatory, assured feature debut by Dee Rees—the all-too-rare coming-of-age tale to honestly represent the experiences of queer Black women. Grounded in the fine-grained specificity and deft characterizations of Rees’s script and built around a beautifully layered performance from Adepero Oduye, Pariah follows Brooklyn teenager Alike, who is navigating the emotional minefields of first love and heartache and the disapproval of her family as she expresses her gender and sexual identities within a system that does not make space for them. Achieving an aching intimacy with its subject through the expressive cinematography of Bradford Young, this deeply felt portrait finds strength in vulnerability and liberation in letting go." Content: "In his controversial masterpiece The Great Dictator, Charlie Chaplin offers both a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and a sly tweaking of his own comic persona. Chaplin, in his first pure talkie, brings his sublime physicality to two roles: the cruel yet clownish "Tomainian" dictator and the kindly Jewish barber who is mistaken for him. Featuring Jack Oakie and Paulette Goddard in stellar supporting turns, The Great Dictator, boldly going after the fascist leader before the U.S.’s official entry into World War II, is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick that culminates in Chaplin’s famously impassioned speech."
