Content: Democracy has died hundreds of times, all over the world. We know what that looks like: chaos descends and the military arrives to restore order, until the people can be trusted to look after their own affairs again. Often, that moment never comes, but there is a danger that this picture is out of date.0Until very recently, most citizens of Western democracies would have imagined that the end was a long way off, and very few would have thought it might be happening before their eyes as Trump, Brexit and paranoid populism have become a reality.0Are we looking for a better way of doing politics, or are we looking for something better than politics? David Runciman, one of the UK's leading professors of politics, answers all this and more as he surveys the political landscape of the West, helping us to recognise the signs of a collapsing democracy and advising us on what comes next

Series Statement: German and European studies of the Willy Brandt Center at the Wroclaw University volume 6
Content: This book describes the transformative power of the European Union in the area of gender equality policy in Poland and Germany from 2004 until 2012. It gives the readers an insight into the process of implementing EU law and the major actors and variables which influence this process and its outcome. The book includes an analysis of national law from the perspective of the implementation of EU directives as well as interviews with experts in this area. It identifies the main actors that support or block the law’s implementation as well as the sociocultural conditioning of the process of implementation and its final outcome in both countries. This shows that every Member State, due to its unique configuration of national actors and conditions, develops a different final way of implementing the same EU law, and therefore the transformative power of the EU leads to divergent outcomes in different Member States.

Content: Over 200,000 children in Germany are summoned to family courts to take part in legal proceedings every year because their parents separate, lose custody of them or have their access to them restricted, or because the children themselves are placed in foster care or children’s homes until they can be returned to their families. In such cases, or even cases of adoption, do Germany’s youth and adoption services truly help to uphold and guar-antee a child’s well-being? What role do guardians ad litem and independent experts play in family court pro-ceedings? Who helps to uphold the rights of children who have been circumcised or have had their sexual organs operated on in another way? How do professionals ensure they treat children empathetically in youth and family court proceedings? How do children feel when they are taken away from their parents or foster parents? In this handbook, Rainer Balloff, who works as an independent consultant in court, reveals from a practical per-spective how a child’s well-being can be upheld and how children can be protected effectively in such situations.

Content: "The ecological crisis is the most overwhelming to have ever faced humanity and its consequences permeate every domain of life. This trenchant book examines its relation to Islamophobia as the dominant form of racism today, showing how both share roots in domination, colonialism and the logics of capitalism. Ghassan Hage proposes that both racism and humanity?s destructive relationship with the environment emanate from the same mode of inhabiting the world. In this process of domestication, an occupying force imposes its own interest as law, subordinating others for the extraction of value, eradicating or exterminating what gets in the way. In connecting these two issues, Hage gives voice to the claim taking shape in many activist spaces that anti-racist and ecological struggles are intrinsically related. In each the aim is to move beyond what makes us see otherness, whether human or non-human, as something that exists solely to be managed"...

Content: "One of the world's leading economists of inequality, Branko Milanovic presents a bold new account of the dynamics that drive inequality on a global scale. Drawing on vast data sets and cutting-edge research, he explains the benign and malign forces that make inequality rise and fall within and among nations. He also reveals who has been helped the most by globalization, who has been held back, and what policies might tilt the balance toward economic justice. Global Inequality takes us back hundreds of years, and as far around the world as data allow, to show that inequality moves in cycles, fueled by war and disease, technological disruption, access to education, and redistribution. The recent surge of inequality in the West has been driven by the revolution in technology, just as the Industrial Revolution drove inequality 150 years ago. But even as inequality has soared within nations, it has fallen dramatically among nations, as middle-class incomes in China and India have drawn closer to the stagnating incomes of the middle classes in the developed world. A more open migration policy would reduce global inequality even further. Both American and Chinese inequality seem well entrenched and self-reproducing, though it is difficult to predict if current trends will be derailed by emerging plutocracy, populism, or war. For those who want to understand how we got where we are, where we may be heading, and what policies might help reverse that course, Milanovic's compelling explanation is the ideal place to start."--Provided by publisher
