Serie: The Chaplin collection : [DVD Video]
Inhalt: Richard Schickel, a noted film critic and historian, has used the familiar techniques of historical documentary ̶ archival film clips interspersed with learned talking heads ̶ to construct a critical biography of one of the dominant figures in 20th-century popular culture. The film, which includes wonderfully thorough analyses of Chaplin's techniques as a comedian and a director, is also an essay on the rise of movie celebrities and the psychological impulses that can both impel and threaten an artist's creativity. The commentary ̶ provided by some of Chaplin's children, by film scholars and by artists ranging from Martin Scorsese to Johnny Depp ̶ is illuminating, and Mr. Schickel's narration (read by Sidney Pollack) provides an elegant and erudite reminder of Chaplin's importance. (A. O. Scott, The New York Times)

Serie: The cinema of Peter Watkins : [DVD-Video]
Inhalt: Peter Watkins' companion-piece to his highly acclaimed EDVARD MUNCH, THE FREETHINKER examines the life, art and times of the noted Swedish dramatist August Strindberg, author of Miss Julie, Inferno and The Dance Of Death. Strindberg is depicted as a rebel, an idealistic and controversial iconoclast who openly criticized the hypocrisy of 19th century society. This unique, complex and truly collaborative project, which focusses much on Strindberg's often turbulent relationship with his first wife, Siri von Essen, was based on original and detailed research carried out by Peter Watkins and produced as part of a full-length video production course at the Nordens Folkhögskola Biskops-Arnö, taking two years to complete. The students raised funds, sewed costumes, learned to operate equipment and peformed all the functions involved in a major theatrical video production. (Project X)

Serie: Tracy & Hepburn - The definitive collection : [DVD-Video mit Movietext]
Inhalt: THE moment is as wrenching as it is unexpected. Katharine Hepburn, a fiercely private person, begins reading a letter she wrote to Spencer Tracy long after he had died in 1967. It is an extremely personal document, openly reflecting the special love that existed between them. Tears welling in her eyes, she recalls that ''living wasn't easy for you, was it?'' She mentions his drinking problem and the puzzling fact that ''you couldn't enter your own life but you could be someone else.'' For all of that, she declares, he was still ''the world's best movie actor.'' The scene, clearly thought out with care, comes at the end of ''The Spencer Tracy Legacy: A Tribute by Katharine Hepburn,''... this is another of those movie-clip compilations that celebrate the talent and glamour of film stars... However, patience and generosity will be rewarded. Written by John L. Miller, the documentary offers a lively review of the Tracy career. Miss Hepburn is on hand not only as narrator but also as host and tour guide. (New York Times)

Inhalt: Before James Dean and Marlon Brando, before Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, there was John Garfield. A tough kid who grew up in the 1920's on the streets of the Lower East Side, Brownsville and the Bronx, Garfield (whose original name was Julius Garfinkle) was one of the first dark-haired, working-class ethnic outsiders to turn into a Hollywood star, following the path of actors like James Cagney. Garfield's chip-on-the-shoulder style and his rugged looks often cast him as a social outsider on the screen: a boxer, a gangster, a soldier. The persona affected actors from the 1950's onward. His relatively brief but dazzling career was cut short by a heart condition and the Hollywood blacklist. He was never a Communist, but he refused to name those, including his wife, Roberta, who had been. He died of a heart attack in 1952 at 39, and 10,000 fans gathered outside Riverside Memorial Chapel in Manhattan. At the time it was the largest turnout for a celebrity funeral in New York since Rudolph Valentino's... ''He's a forgotten star,'' said David Heeley, one of the producers of ''The John Garfield Story,''... (Bernard Weintraub: Recalling John Garfield, Rugged Star KO'd by Fate, New York Times, 30.1.2003)

Inhalt: For forty years, Henri Langlois presided over the Cinematheque Francaise with absolute commitment and unwavering passion. Beginning in 1936, Langlois' beg, borrow and steal hustling preserved the priceless treasures of an art form then still too new to be recognized as such. Through ad hoc screenings in Paris apartments, hallways and stairwells, the young Langlois shared his love for film art with the enthusiasm of an aesthetic epicure and the discerning appetite of a film gourmand. Under Nazi occupation, Langlois went underground, rescuing and secretly screening banned films under the noses of the SS. Through the halcyon 60's Langlois battled bureaucrats, championed auteurs and ushered in a new golden age of cinema where "life broke through the screen" and filmmaking and film-going merged into a single discipline. Knitting together remarkable footage of Godard and Francois Truffaut defending the Cinematheque against a 1968 Paris riot squad, Langlois and Alfred Hitchcock sending-up the staid Legion D'honneur ceremony, and Langlois himself charismatically holding forth, Henri Langlois: Phantom of the Cinematheque is itself a treasure trove. A "fascinating film" (New York Times), it captures Langlois' life, loves, triumphs, and tragedies with candor and enduring affection. (Covertext)

Inhalt: A film with Louise Brook's "final incarnation as a memoirist, writing out of her apartment in Rochester ̶ where she can be seen, sitting at her kitchen table, in a 48-minute interview shot by the documentarians Richard Leacock and Susan Steinberg Woll in [1971]" (Dave Kehr, New York Times). It's accompanied by a 2006 reminiscence of interviewer/director Richard Leacock (5 min.) of how he managed to get the reclusive Brooks to open up to him.

Inhalt: The languid myth of Rudy disturbed the sleep of millions of women and men with his provocative attitude and gestures, with his sinful adventures, private scandals and public virtues. The emigrant from Southern Italy who once disembarked in New York when he was only 17 years old became an authentic divinity in a very short time. And as it does happen with classic myths of the ancient times, we discover how Valentino's life and film career transcend the historical chronicle to enter a mythological dimension, where events are nebulous and indefinite, ready to be transformed into legendary tales. Inhalt: It is the documentary core of this film, in the black militant's speeches and interviews and the movie's surprisingly balanced format, quoting dissenters in policy, that makes its real worth. The picture was adapted by Arnold Perl from "The Autobiography of Malcolm X." His widow, Betty Shabazz, a cosponsor of the movie and a woman with a beautiful speaking voice, appears briefly and effectively, one of many meaningful cameos. The personal drama is so credible and ironic, as the dynamic leader breaks with his Islam colleagues and strives, more reflectively, for Afro-American unity, that the footage of the gunned-down Malcolm (a chaotic aftermath) comes as a jolt. The conclusion, with the funeral and various testimonies, is numbing and touching. The sight we will remember is the black face inside the coffin, eyes closed forever, head swathed in white.
