    ISBN: 978-3-318-00676-6
Series Statement: Frontiers of hormone research Vol. 27
Content: Understanding the processes by which we ourselves are born is arguably one of the greatest current challenges in clinical medicine. The prevention of preterm delivery, the cause of 70–80% of neonatal morbidity, has become a key area of research. 'The Endocrinology of Parturition' provides an encyclopedia of human parturition which charts the progress of this goal.¨ In nineteen chapters of authoritative writing this volume covers a wide range of topics from the comparative endocrinology of mammalian parturition and the socio-economic impact of preterm delivery to the relative merits of current tocolytics. Hormonal actions involved in the process of parturition and the role of different hormones are discussed in detail. Several new approaches like the concept of parturition as a variant of inflammatory response or the role of the wide spectrum of known cytokines are introduced. This timely book in a highly dynamic research area is of special interest to birth-clinical obstetricians, endocrinologists and reproductive biologists as well as general practitioners involved in obstetrics

    ISBN: 978-3-318-00270-6
Series Statement: Progress in surgery Vol. 25
Content: This handy volume reviews the current approaches to acute appendicitis, appendectomy being the most commonly performed emergency surgical procedure in the western world. The benefits and costs of open versus laparoscopic appendectomy are discussed by international specialists in the field. Exact diagnosis on right iliac fossa pain is still difficult, especially in children, young females, older patients and during pregnancy. It is in these cases that the laparoscopic approach may be most beneficial, both in terms of diagnosis and surgery, whereas the open procedure is still the gold standard in patients with a clear diagnosis of appendicitis. However, laparoscopic surgery is at least as effective, although more expensive and complicated to perform. Furthermore, in terms of the wound infection rate, the laparoscopic method has proven to be more effective. This book is of interest for general and laparoscopic surgeons, as well as for emergency doctors, gastroenterologists, gynecologists and doctors with an interest in epidemiology
Note: International Meeting, Bern, May 1997 ; open compared to laparoscopic appendectomy: Where do we stand today?

Series Statement: Current problems in dermatology Vol. 33
Content: In recent years the development of new technologies has permited the production of 'functional' or 'smart' textiles. These fabrics are capable of sensing changes in environmental conditions or body functions and are adequately responding to them. They are able to absorb substances from the skin or to release therapeutic or cosmetic compounds. For instance, they can be used in underwear with an integrated cardio-online system or as textiles with carrier molecules. The focal point of interest in biofunctional textiles lies currently on the use of textiles supporting therapy and prevention in dermatology. This volume collects information about new trends in the interaction between textiles and the skin, particularly the development of antimicrobial finished textiles. It presents a selection of papers which will contribute to further consolidate the dialogue between dermatologists, allergologists, biomaterial scientists and textile engineers
Note: a multifaceted overview of current research and future trends

    ISBN: 978-3-8055-9030-3
Series Statement: Developments in ophthalmology Vol. 44
Content: Since the advent of pars plana vitrectomy, immense technical advances in the treatment of retinal diseases have been made. However, some mechanically based limitations of vitreoretinal surgery may result in incomplete removal of the vitreous, especially at the vitreoretinal interface and at the vitreous base. Here, pharmacology can be of assistance. For instance, enzymes that cleave the vitreoretinal junction without damaging the retina or which induce liquefaction may be applied. Neuroprotective and antiproliferative agents may hold the promise of preserving neuronal function when the retina is detached or when proliferative vitreoretinopathy or proliferative diabetic retinopathy has developed. Earlier intervention is possible and can save visual function before the retinal cytoarchitecture is destroyed. Consequently, pharmacologic vitreolysis will change the current concepts of treating retinal and macular diseases. This volume is the first comprehensive up-date on pharmacology-assisted vitreoretinal surgery. Researchers in the fields of medical and surgical retina as well as retinal specialists and vitreoretinal surgeons in clinics will benefit from this topical summary
