    Series Statement: Facture volume 4
Content: A rigorous and wide-ranging investigation of the techniques and reasons behind the artistic practice of replication. Volume 4 of the National Gallery of Art's biennial conservation research journal Facture examines the complex themes of series, multiples, and replicas. With a broad historical purview that spans from the Renaissance to the 20th century, this publication considers various modes of replication-by the artist's own hand or workshop, as a posthumous creation, or as a preferred practice-and their motivations. Drawing on new research into materials and techniques, nine essays focus on works in diverse media by artists such as Sandro Botticelli, Auguste Rodin, and Robert Rauschenberg and present intriguing conclusions about the nature of serialization and the relationships among multiple versions of a composition. Filled with spectacularly detailed photographs and fresh discoveries, this volume provides exceptional insight into these extraordinary works of art and offers the possibility of exciting new avenues of inquiry

Series Statement: CASVA seminar papers 3
Content: In his introduction Harry Cooper reminds the reader of the fundamentals of the debate over cubism as laid down in the late twentieth century in exhibitions at the Musée national Picasso, Paris (1987) and at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1989), after which the lines of criticism were pretty firmly drawn between semiotic or formalist readings and sociopolitical interpretations. The cubism of Braque and Picasso was the privileged ground of contention, and so it is not surprising that a quarter of a century later classic works by these two artists continue to fascinate and remain at the center of discussion. The choice of speakers and topics for the seminars at CASVA was intended to encourage exchange among members of a new generation. We were also grateful for the presence of Yve-Alain Bois at the first meeting on October 2013, for he was a major contributor to the earlier debates.--Provided by publisher

Content: For more than 40 years, Sally Mann (b. 1951) has made experimental, elegiac, and hauntingly beautiful photographs that explore the overarching themes of existence: memory, desire, death, the bonds of family, and nature’s magisterial indifference to human endeavor. What unites this broad body of work—portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and other studies—is that it is all “bred of a place,” the American South. Mann, who is a native of Lexington, Virginia, uses her deep love of her homeland and her knowledge of its historically fraught heritage to ask powerful, provocative questions—about history, identity, race, and religion—that reverberate across geographic and national boundaries. Organized into five sections—Family, The Land, Last Measure, Abide with Me, and What Remains—and including many works not previously exhibited or published, Sally Mann: A Thousand Crossings is a sweeping overview of Mann’s artistic achievements. Content: "Alonso Berruguete (c. 1488-1561) revolutionized the arts of Renaissance Spain with a dramatic style of sculpture that reflected the decade or more he had spent in Italy while young. Trained as a painter, he traveled to Italy around 1506, where he interacted with Michelangelo and other leading artists. In 1518, he returned to Spain and was appointed court painter to the new king, Charles I. Eventually, he made his way to Valladolid, where he shifted his focus to sculpture, opening a large workshop that produced breathtaking multistory altarpieces (retablos) decorated with sculptures in painted wood. This handsomely illustrated catalogue is the first in English to treat Berruguete's art and career comprehensively. It follows his career from his beginnings in Castile to his final years in Toledo, where he produced his last great work, the marble tomb of Cardinal Juan de Tavera. Enriching the chronological narrative are discussions of important aspects of Berruguete's life and practice: his complicated relationship with social status and wealth; his activity as a draftsman and use of prints; how he worked with his many assistants to create his wood sculptures; and his legacy as an artist"--

Content: The Italian chiaroscuro woodcut : history and technique / Naoko Takahatake -- The origins of the chiaroscuro woodcut / Peter Parshall -- The chiaroscuro woodcut and drawing in sixteenth-century Italy / Jonathan Bober -- The place of the chiaroscuro woodcut within European printmaking / Antony Griffiths -- Catalogue / Naoko Takahatake, with Jonathan Bober, Jamie Gabbarelli, and Linda Stiber Morenus
Content: "The art of the chiaroscuro woodcut is celebrated in this groundbreaking and generously illustrated book. Chiaroscuro woodcuts are among the most immediately appealing of all historic prints, displaying exquisite invention, refined draftsmanship, technical virtuosity, and sumptuous color. Printing two or more woodblocks inked in different tones to create an image, the chiaroscuro woodcut was the earliest, most successful foray into color printing in Europe. Following its invention in Germany, the technique was first adopted around 1516 in Italy where it flourished through the sixteenth century. This novel art form engaged the interests of the most celebrated artists of the Renaissance, including Titian, Raphael, Parmigianino, and Beccafumi, and underwent sophisticated developments in the hands of such master printmakers as Ugo da Carpi, Antonio da Trento, Niccolò Vicentino, and Andrea Andreani. Featuring more than 100 prints and related drawings, this book incorporates pioneering art historical research and scientific analysis to present a comprehensive study of the subject. Essays trace its creative origins and evolution, describing both materials and means of production. Brimming with full-color illustrations of rare and beautiful works, this book offers a fresh interpretation of these remarkable prints, which exemplify the rich imagery of the Italian Renaissance"--
