Content: My interest in white space in texts and fascination for printed materials and propaganda books from East Germany brought me to discover the Plan. The Plan is the chameleonic directive to every situation of societal life – whether it is playing sports, writing a book, or practicing for war. Always think of the Plan. Better yet: always have it in your hand. The Plan consists of a book and a folder, together forming one object. The book contains 26 pictures reproduced from miniature books published in the German Democratic Republic during the 1980s. Each book is accompanied by an original, pre-owned GDR folder, each different and individually obtained from households in the former state. The folder comes with a foldout sheet of the Plan. Edition of 150 copies, numbered. Digital print, full color paperback, A5 size, 48 pages. Plus original GDR folder, A4 size, with a folded and stamped A2 sheet.-- Homepage der Künstlerin (Stand: 03.09.2018): https://elisabethtonnard.com/works/the-plan/

Content: Thirty-three photographs of Joachim Schmid working on his E-Book. (E-Book was published in February of 2016 and is based on a letter Joachim wrote to me. The words of this letter remain invisible in his book but every E is included in the form of a photograph. The various E’s, almost 500 of them, were photographed in a number of different cities during 2015. There is no digital version of the book.) Joachim Schmid is well-known for his work with other people’s photographs. It is less known, or even unknown, that he takes the camera to hand himself sometimes. This little book documents just that and thereby provides a so far unseen aspect of Joachim Schmid’s practice. We get a glimpse of the artist’s movements in the age of lcd-screens and in addition to that a portrait of the streets that write to us.-- Homepage der Künstlerin (Stand: 03.09.2018): https://elisabethtonnard.com/works/joachim-schmid-works/

Content: Indirections is a series of pamphlets that focus on the manoeuvring involved when things are presented to the public eye. Duplicitous language, selective filters, whether the deceptions of Soviet propaganda or the deceits that I find in my local newspaper (and they are surprisingly similar), bend and spin things that perhaps were never even straight to begin with. Each item in the series is a folded sheet containing a single found image and its caption. The caption is on the front, the image is hidden inside. By uncoupling them, the two elements are each given their own stage – as a result a new space opens up between them. In that space a small tragicomedy is played out. There are now eight pamphlets published. This is not a closed set; more may be added to this series eventually and each pamphlet can function by itself. Each is an A3 sized sheet, folded to 14 x 29,7 cm and digitally printed on 300 gsm paper in an edition of 90 copies (not numbered).-- Homepage der Künstlerin (Stand: 04.09.2018): https://elisabethtonnard.com/works/indirections/

Content: "A History of Dogma" is based on a book about the history of dogma (Walther Köhler's "Dogmengeschichte", Zürich 1951) that I came upon at a second-hand booksale in my hometown. The book, it was clear, had been expertly read by its previous owner. The markings left by this most dutiful reader, who essentially created a new history of dogma, are presented here. This book was published in Leerdam, The Netherlands in an edition of 75 copies - letzte Seite
Note: Titeldaten vom Umschlag , "The edition is limited to 75 numbered copies and the books are handmade. I printed them myself for color and reproduction accuracy, and bound them by hand using cold glue, a few tools and a lot of patience. It did occur to me at times that the stubborn working methods behind this very simple but highly labor-intensive book were mirroring or even outdoing the activity of the anonymous reader whose marks I was preserving." - Homepage der Künstlerin (https://elisabethtonnard.com/), Stand: 04.12.2019
