Content: Born in Calabria, Italy, in 1942, Anna Maria Maiolino is one of the leading artists of her generation. Her work reflects the major cultural and political realities of postwar Europe and South America as well as issues of patriarchy, feminism, and immigration. This book presents her prints, drawings, sculpture, photography, video, and performance pieces. From her early woodcuts, which spoke directly to the tense political atmosphere of her adopted country of Brazil, to her introspective works on paper-every aspect of Maiolino's incredibly diverse and accomplished career is presented in exquisite illustrations and with a series of informed and provocative essays. Content: Featuring over one hundred works and documentation of forty exhibitions and installations both public and private, Urs Fischer presents six years of work in a substantial volume, 'Sculptures 2013-2018'. Arranged chronologically, this book allows the reader to follow Fischer's developments in form and his frequent adventure into whimsy. The artist's instinct for design is evident not only in his individual works but also in his clarity of vision for a space, beautifully illustrated in this volume. Sculpture inherently has physical presence and Fischer utilizes this to manipulate the viewer's perception of reality. Encountering the immense and the minuscule, the ever-changing and the static, a viewer must reconcile with his or her own presence in time. Experience significant ephemeral, collaborative and interactive works in context in over 400 pages plus gatefold inserts

Content: Jiro Takamatsu (1936-98) is central to the development of post-war art in Japan. He expanded points into volume, brought sculptural actions into the life of the city, and made shadows and perspective tangible. 'The Temperature of Sculpture' is the first institutional solo exhibition of Takamatsu outside of his home country, presenting over seventy works made between 1961 and 1977. Takamatsu sought out the interplay between presence and absence, carefully thinking through relationships between artwork and its perceiver. He turned to sculpture in 1961, applying sculptural thinking to see how objects might change their temperature. The materials Takamatsu chose were always ready at hand. Sometimes they were tangible - everyday objects such as bottles, cloth, string, stones or furniture. Other times they had a strong association to sculptural traditions - such as marble, wood, concrete and iron. Significantly, he made use of intangible properties - perspective, shadows and numbers. These he made material and metaphorical in objects, events and drawings, giving form to the imponderables of space and time. Exhibition: Henry Moore Institute, Leeds, UK (13.07. - 22.10.2017)

Content: Since the earliest myths of the sculptor Pygmalion bringing a statue to life through desire, artists have explored the boundaries between sculpture and the physical materiality of the body. This groundbreaking volume examines key sculptural works from 13th-century Europe to the global present, revealing new insights into the strategies artists deploy to blur the distinction between art and life. Sculpture, which has historically taken the human figure as its subject, is presented here in myriad manifestations created by artists ranging from Donatello and Degas to Picasso, Kiki Smith, and Jeff Koons. Featuring works created in traditional media such as wood and marble as well as the unexpected such as wax, metal, and blood, Like Life presents sculpture both conventional and shocking, including effigies, dolls, mannequins, automata, waxworks, and anatomical models. Containing texts by art and cultural historians as well as interviews with contemporary artists, this is a provocative exploration of three-dimensional representations of the human body

Content: "Medardo Rosso (1858-1928) is one of the most original and influential figures in the history of modern art, and this book is the first historically substantiated critical account of his life and work. An innovative sculptor, photographer, and draughtsman, Rosso was a key figure in the transition from the traditional forms of sculpture that persisted through the nineteenth century to the experimental forms that developed in the twentieth. His antimonumental, antiheroic work reflected alienation in the modern experience yet also showed deep feeling for interactions between self and other. Rosso's art was also transnational: he refused allegiance to a single culture or artistic heritage and declared himself both a citizen of the world and a maker of art without national limits. In this book, Sharon Hecker develops a narrative that is an alternative to the dominant Franco-centered perspective on the origin of modern sculpture in which Rodin plays the role of lone heroic innovator. Offering an original way to comprehend Rosso, A Moment's Monument negotiates the competing cultural imperatives of nationalism and internationalism that shaped the European art world at the fin de siècle"--Provided by publisher

Series Statement: Public sculpture of Britain 18
Content: This book provides a detailed survey of the significant public sculpture located across South Yorkshire, including statues, memorials, architectural sculpture and reliefs. Each artwork is fully discussed in terms of the circumstances of its commission, the design and making process, and public responses. Style and iconography is also covered. The range of works available in the region is impressive with notable contributions by some of the country's most significant artists including the very earliest works by Sir Francis Chantrey in Sheffield and later work at Owston, a double memorial by Peter Scheemakers at Barnby Dun, a Pomeroy frieze and other reliefs on Sheffield's Town Hall, and work by Onslow Ford, Alfred Turner and Alfred Drury. Many of the memorials and sculptural works relate to the region's industry which was based on coal mining, steel production and related manufacture. This is reflected in nineteenth, twentieth and twenty first century pieces, sometimes commissioned to remember significant industrial disasters or to register the demise of the mining industry. In other cases sculpture has been commissioned to celebrate the endeavour of the local population. In terms of local talent the work of Frank Tory & Sons stands out; a highly skilled and prolific family of local sculptors. From the 1880s onwards this family produced beautiful examples of stone and wood carving, and through the first half of the twentieth century, a long period marked by significant stylistic developments. More recently, Sheffield and South Yorkshire has made a significant contribution to the renaissance in public art in Britain from the 1980s onwards and there is much contemporary work that is of interest in its towns and cities

Content: "An authoritative survey of sculpture's coming of age in Canada. Found in public spaces and parks, art galleries and university buildings, along riverbanks as well as in city squares, private gardens and even underwater, Canadian sculpture encompasses a range of materials and styles from traditional bone and bronze to postmodern multimedia installations. As this book demonstrates, artistic intentions among the nation's sculptors, whether political, social, theoretical or aesthetic, are as diverse as Canada itself. The distinguished cultural historian Maria Tippett begins this richly illustrated study of Canadian sculpture in 13,000 BCE by examining a handcrafted shard found in the Bluefish Caves of the Yukon and proceeds to consider Inuit and First Nations sculptural practices alongside those of Euro-Canadians. Dr. Tippett begins with traditional forms such as totem poles and liturgical carvings before moving along to the landmark EXPO 67 exhibition and other significant events, concluding with the postmodern artists who, with "a relentless striving for the new" work within new technological realms such as 3D modelling and virtual reality spaces. Dr. Tippett's survey evinces an avid interest in the logistics of sculpture, exploring the ways in which the medium demands more space, time, money and material to produce and exhibit than disciplines like drawing and painting. The result is that in Canadian sculpture, more than in other artistic practices, complex social, economic and cultural forces have interacted with the pure inspiration of artists in their studios. Sculpture in Canada is a groundbreaking work that will have a profound impact in introducing readers to the underappreciated wealth of this most public of Canadian arts."--

Content: Drawn from a unique collection held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, this book includes 62 bark paintings produced in the 1950s, as well as woven forms, paperbark objects, carved wooden figures and feathered body ornamentation. Together with essays on the artists, the art and the history of Milingimbi, and historic and contemporary photographs, Art from Milingimbi provides readers with a unique insight into the artists, their culture and their connectedness to place. While there has been great interest in art from western and north-eastern Arnhem Land and Ramingining, there has been little written or published on the exemplary art of Milingimbi. With new research conducted in collaboration with the Milingimbi community, this book is the first publication about Milingimbi and the exemplary artists working there in the 1950s. These artists actively engaged with the art market and generously depicted the complexities of Yolngu culture in their works. Many works refer to the highly valued commodity of sugarbag or honey and depict the related clan designs. Other evocative works refer to environmental events, such as rain falling in the trees or animals waiting in anticipation for the rains to come
