Content: This first full-length biography chronicles Korngold's life and works from his days as a celebrated Wunderkind in imperial Vienna, through his spectacular career as a composer of opera and symphonic works, to his escape from and Nazis to America, where he pioneered the symphonic film score and won two Oscars. The author provides a detailed evaluation of the composer, his relationship with the serialists, his contribution to film music, and his place in music history. The book draws on interviews with many great musicians, singers, actors, writers, and directors, plus legendary figures from Hollywood's golden age, all of whom knew and worked with Korngold. A foreword by the composer's eldest son Ernst Korngold, a comprehensive discography and bibliography, rare illustrations, and a complete list of Korngold's works make this the definitive biography of a remarkable composer.--From publisher description.

Content: "The last decade has seen an increased willingness by Western governments to use force to intervene in distant humanitarian crises, and this has been coupled with significant levels of media attention to the human casualties of war and conflict. Central to this new policy of intervention is the so-called 'CNN effect': the saturation of Western viewers with non-stop, real-time news footage of wars and military actions on television and the Internet. In turn, these images constitute a powerful plea for action. But can news media drive foreign policy, or are governments oblivious to partial news coverage? Are there any connections between media coverage of humanitarian crises and Western intervention, and what is the truth behind the 'CNN effect'?" "The CNN Effect examines the relationship between the state and its media, and considers the role played by news reporting in a series of 'humanitarian' interventions in Iraq, Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo and Rwanda. Piers Robinson challenges traditional views of media subservience and argues that sympathetic news coverage at key moments in foreign crises can influence the response of Western governments."--BOOK JACKET.

Content: "Over the past three decades, the study of the film soundtrack has developed into a rich scholarly discipline, characterized by diverse approaches and methodologies drawn from such disciplines as musicology, music theory, film and media studies, and sound studies. Yet, despite the diversity of approaches, the logic of the soundtrack and the relationship among its various components remains underexplored and undertheorized. The voice has long been an object of focus of many theoretical approaches to sound in cinema. But because of the way it relates to meaning and hierarchy, "voice" is also a useful metaphorical conceit for thinking about relations within the soundtrack. "Voice" can have multiple meanings when considering the integrated soundtrack and its position in the history of film music and sound. This volume builds on existing scholarship on music and film sound, with particular attention to the concepts of the voice in cinema, vococentrism, and the integrated soundtrack. What is the cinematic significance of the singing voice? How do music and dialogue interact in cinema? To what extent, if any, is silent film vococentric? Is vococentrism still a useful category to apply to conetmporary postclassical film? These are some of the questions the essays in this volume will address"--

Content: Filmmakers have often encouraged us to regard people with physical disabilities in terms of pity, awe, humor, or fear - as "Others" who somehow deserve to be isolated from the rest of society
Content: In this first history of the portrayal of physical disability in the movies, Martin Norden examines hundreds of Hollywood movies (and notable international ones), finds their place within mainstream society, and uncovers the movie industry's practices for maintaining the status quo - keeping people with disabilities dependent and "in their place."
Content: Norden offers a dazzling array of physically disabled characters who embody or break out of the stereotypes that have both influenced and been symptomatic of society's fluctuating relationship with its physically disabled minority. He shows us "sweet innocents" like Tiny Tim, "obsessive avengers" like Quasimodo, variations on the disabled veteran, and many others
