Content: This book reflects the recent developments while providing a comprehensive introduction to the Internet of things (IoT) and cloud technologies in transforming aging. IoT has its origins in device connectivity, whereas the cloud grew out of computer science. They can be viewed as two facets of the same field, and together they have undergone substantial development over the past ten years. This book is aimed at advanced undergraduates or first-year research students, as well as researchers and practitioners, and assumes no previous knowledge of IoT and cloud concepts. Basics of computer applications and concepts are required. Some familiarity with gerontechnology would be helpful, though not essential, as this book includes a self-contained introduction to how technology is transforming elderly care and eHealth management. This book aims to give references that offer more detail than is possible here and hopefully provide an entry point into a series of technologies that can improve the quality of life for the elderly. The book includes several case studies explaining how each piece of technology works and its benefits to the elderly. This book is also considered as a simple guide to the technologies for the elderly to use in the community.

Content: Algorithms are not to be regarded as a technical structure but as a social phenomenon - they embed themselves, currently still very subtle, into our political and social system. Algorithms shape human behavior on various levels: they influence not only the aesthetic reception of the world but also the well-being and social interaction of their users. They act and intervene in a political and social context. As algorithms influence individual behavior in these social and political situations, their power should be the subject of critical discourse - or even lead to active disobedience and to the need for appropriate tools and methods which can be used to break the algorithmic power.

Content: Age Friendly: Ending Ageism in America is a rallying call to make the United States a more equitable and just nation in terms of age. "Age friendliness" means being inclusive towards older people as workers, consumers, and citizens, something that can't be said to exist today. The United States and, especially, Big Business, are notoriously age-unfriendly places, a result of our obsession with youth. Virtually all aspects of everyday life in America will be impacted by the doubling or tripling of the number of older people over the next two decades, more reason to adopt age friendliness as a cause. Age Friendly shows how large companies are in an ideal position to address the aging of America and, in the process, benefit from making their organizations more age friendly. Because of its economic power and commitment to diversity in the workplace, Big Business--specifically the Fortune 1000--has the opportunity and responsibility to take a leadership role in changing the narrative of aging in America. The book shows that age friendliness offers the possibility of bridging gaps not just between younger and older people, but those based on income, class, race, gender, politics, and geography. More than anything else, Age Friendly presents a bold and counterintuitive idea--aging is a positive thing for businesses, individuals, and society as a whole--and we should embrace it rather than fear it. While ageism is a pervasive force in America that, like racism and gender discrimination, runs contrary to our democratic ideals, there is some good news. An age friendly movement is spreading in America and around the world as a growing number of cities and towns strive to better meet the needs of their older residents. Aa well, a concerted effort is being made to convince Big Business that an intergenerational workforce is in the best interests of not just older employees but the companies themselves. Age brings experience, perspective, and wisdom--just the right skill set for both short- and long-term decision-making. The aging of America also presents major implications for businesses in terms of marketing to older consumers. Baby boomers are still the key to the economy despite marketers' focus on youth, much in part to their collective wealth and propensity to consume. Age friendly marketing thus makes much sense due to "the longevity economy," i.e., the billions of dollars that older consumers spend each year and the goldmine that looms in the future as they become an even bigger percentage of the population. Finally, Age Friendly discusses how more corporations are pursuing social responsibility in addition to maximizing profits--an ideal opportunity for corporations to demonstrate good citizenship by supporting age friendliness on a local, state, or national level

Content: "Librarians need to understand the needs and abilities of differently abled patrons, and anyone responsible for hiring and managing librarians must know how to provide an equitable environment. This book serves as an educational resource for both groups"--
Content: "Understanding the needs and abilities of patrons who are differently abled increases librarians' ability to serve them from childhood through adulthood. While some librarians are fortunate to have had coursework to help them understand the needs and abilities of the differently abled, many have had little experience working with this diverse group. In addition, many persons who are differently abled are--or would like to become--librarians. Disabilities and the Library helps readers understand the challenges faced by people who are differently abled, both as patrons and as information professionals. Readers will learn to assess their library's physical facilities, programming, staff, and continuing education to ensure that their libraries are prepared to include people of all abilities. Inclusive programming and collection development suggestions will help librarians to meet the needs of patrons and colleagues with mobility and dexterity problems, learning differences, hearing and vision limitations, sensory and cognitive challenges, autism, and more. Additional information is included about assistive and adaptive technologies and web accessibility. Librarians will value this accessible and important book as they strive for equity and inclusivity"--

Content: "When we think of the radical changes that transformed America during the twentieth century, our minds most often go to the fifties and sixties: the Civil Rights Movement, changing gender roles, and new economic opportunities all point to a decisive turning point. But these were not the only changes that shaped our world, and in Living on the Edge, we learn that rapid social change and uncertainty defined the lives of Americans born at the turn of the century. The authors mine data from the famous Berkeley Longitudinal Study to reveal the daily lives, opportunities, and struggles of the 1900 generation. Their early lives were uniquely situated in historical time and especially marked by the often-transient migration pathways their own parents took across the Atlantic or westward-journeys prompted by fires, floods, and earthquakes, by the shift from agriculture toward industry, by the early illnesses and deaths of parents and siblings, and by World War I--all before picking up the story of how the Great Depression and World War II carried significant outcomes for them, too, alongside their children. Most surprising about the book is just how much about the 1900 Generation can be applied to life today, despite the gap of a century. There are remarkable commonalities in renegotiating roles for women and men, in reorganizing marriage and family roles and relationships, in managing a dramatically changing economy, and in coping with and adapting to hardship. In Living on the Edge, we have an intimate glimpse into not just the history of our country, but the feelings, dreams, and fears of a generation remarkably similar to those of our own time"--

Content: This open access book collects the major discussions in divorce research in Europe. It starts with an understanding of divorce trends. Why was divorce increasing so rapidly throughout the US and Europe and do we see signs of a turn? Do cohabitation breakups influence divorce trends or is there a renewed stability on the partner market? In terms of divorce risks, the book contains new insights on Eastern European countries. These post socialist countries have evolved dramatically since the fall of the Wall and at present they show the highest divorce figures in Europe. Also the influence of gender, and more specifically women’s education as a risk in divorce is examined cross nationally. The book also provides explanations for the negative gradient in female education effects on divorce. It devotes three separate parts to new insights in the post-divorce effects of the life course event by among others looking at consequences for adults and children but also taking the larger family network into account. As such the book is of interest to demographers, sociologists, psychologists, family therapists, NGOs, and politicians.

Content: "This essential volume explores the vital role of communication in the aging process and how this varies for different social groups and cultural communities. It reveals how communication can empower people in the process of aging, and that how we communicate about age is critically important to - and is at the heart of - aging successfully. Giles et al. confront the uncertainty and negativity surrounding "aging" - a process with which we all have to cope - by expertly placing communication at the core of the process. They address the need to avoid negative language, discuss the lifespan as an evolving adventure, and introduce a new theory of successful aging: The communication ecology model of successful aging (CEMSA). They explore the research on key topics including: Age stereotypes; age identities, and messages of ageism; the role of culture, gender, ethnicity, and being a member of marginalized groups; the ingredients of intergenerational communication; depiction of aging and youth in the media; and how and why talk about death and dying can be instrumental in promoting control over life's demands. Communication for Successful Aging is essential reading for graduate students of psychology, human development, gerontology, communication, as well as scholars in the social sciences, and all of us concerned with this complex academic topic, and personal challenge"--
