Series Statement: Demographic Research Monographs, A series of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Rostock, Germany
Content: The monograph demonstrates the widespread existence of differences in life span by month of birth in the elderly populations of contemporary societies. It provides evidence that the pattern is linked to the seasons of the year, by comparing the Northern and the Southern Hemisphere. It formulates and tests a series of explanations for the month-of-birth effect and rejects many of the most frequently offered explanations. In particular, it rejects those that attribute the month-of-birth effect to social or statistical confounding. It establishes a link between the month-of-birth pattern in the life span and the month-of-birth pattern in survival during the first year of life. It provides evidence that nutrition and infectious disease early in life play an important role in adult health and survival later in life and that the differences in life span by month of birth still exist in cohorts born today

Content: "Inheritance, once the preserve of the propertied upper classes, has become a much more common experience. Many more people now have something of material value to bequeath when they die, mainly because of the spread of home ownership during the second half of the twentieth century. Passing On examines what these changes can tell us about kinship in England, through a study of how contemporary families handle inheritance." "Based on the findings of a major research project into inheritance and kinship, Passing On examines how property and possessions are transmitted, 'who gets what' and the meaning this has for individuals and families. The authors argue that we should understand English kinship as a set of relational practices which are flexible and variable, rather than as a rigid structure or system. Inheritance is characterised more by symbolic practices and moral reasoning than by materialism." "Of interest to lecturers and students of sociology, anthropology, social policy, law and gender studies, Passing On is also of considerable relevance to those seeking to understand changing forms of kinship and ownership, especially researchers, policy makers and legal practitioners."--BOOK JACKET.
