Series Statement: Educational research volume 1
Content: Long description: What can we learn from a teacher's journal about working with challenging youth? Why does the Training Room Program in German schools impede the development of an empowering learning culture? What experiences transpire during a train trip to the sea with an unruly crew of school boys? Or: what happens when children plan a trip on their own? Anyone who has accumulated experiences in teaching faces creative choices when putting that legacy to paper. The author chose to use this selection of studies to illustrate formative and inspirational moments from his years as a dedicated teacher and father
Content: Biographical note: Joachim Broecher lives in Berlin and is professor and director of the Department for the Education of Learners with Emotional, Social, and Behavioral Difficulties at the University of Flensburg, Germany. His research interests center around experiential education, urban studies, cultural mapping, and school culture development

Content: 〈p〉If we believe popular social critique, we are living in a society determined by anxiety. People are increasingly concerned about social decline, social cohesion, the consequences of climate change, or crime. This volume compiles current research results on people's emotions and critically examines the diagnosis of an "anxiety society": are the economic concerns of the middle class really responsible for the electoral successes of right-wing populist parties? What fears do precariously employed people have and what influences the professional concerns of young people? And, importantly: How do people with a migration background perceive social cohesion in our society?〈/p〉

Content: Scholars have long seen trust as a foundational social good. We therefore have ample studies on building trust in free markets, on cultivating trust in the state, and on rebuilding trust through civil society. The contributors to this volume, instead, take a step back. They ask: Can mistrust ever be more than the flip side of trust, more than the sign of an absence or failure? By looking ethnographically at what a variety of actors actually do when they express mistrust, this volume offers a richly empirical trove of the social life of mistrust across a range of settings

Content: For a good 50 years now, theses of »vanishing humanity«, its »dissolution«, or its »end« have been haunting philosophy. People constantly speak of the »death of the subject«. From Kant, Hegel, and Marx to Nietzsche, Heidegger, Adorno, and Foucault, a philosophical skepticism is manifesting which concerns »man«, pointing beyond him. This volume sheds light on the backgrounds and meanings of these »post-modern« postulations without succumbing to polemic prejudice. The different contributions reconstruct the historically relevant criticisms that speak out against an anthropological exaltation and absolutization of »mankind«. At the same time, the volume takes a philosophical stance against the current trend of naturalist images of humanity being revived in biological sciences and brain research

Content: Joseph Joachim (1831-1907), of Jewish-Hungarian descent, was arguably the greatest violinist of the nineteenth century. His performing career in Berlin transformed the aesthetics and interpretation of German music. But Joachim was also a composer of virtuoso pieces, violin concertos, orchestral overtures, and chamber music works, all written between 1847 and 1864 in one intense outpouring of creativity. Katharina Uhde follows Joachim's compositional path through a changing cultural milieu. Joachim's compositions display intimate knowledge of the works of Mendelssohn, Wagner, Liszt, Schumann, and Brahms, yet he was no mere imitator. Joachim's style, classically conceived yet seasoned with a preference for dark, melancholy soundscapes and, in the earlier years, ciphers, virtuosity, and 'psychological' programmaticism, emerges as the product of various personal and socio-cultural currents: his search for national, religious, and cultural identity and a mature compositional style. Joachim's music drew on a wealth of treasures accumulated in his process of 'enculturation', which began with Mendelssohn in Leipzig. Joachim's aesthetic evolved from a deeply subjective approach, not insignificantly inspired by his muse, Gisela von Arnim. Her circle - the von Arnim and Grimm families - became Joachim's cultural and literary haven. But unforeseen events also impacted his output, among them Schumann's death, the ascent of the young Brahms, and the 'War of the Romantics'. Joachim's music throws light onto a vibrant decade, colored by realism, naturalism, new visual technologies, and emerging academic disciplines including psychology. Uhde's book will be the standard work on the music of Joseph Joachim for many years to come. - KATHARINA UHDE is Assistant Professor for Violin and Musicology at Valparaiso University, IN.
Content: Over 200,000 children in Germany are summoned to family courts to take part in legal proceedings every year because their parents separate, lose custody of them or have their access to them restricted, or because the children themselves are placed in foster care or children’s homes until they can be returned to their families. In such cases, or even cases of adoption, do Germany’s youth and adoption services truly help to uphold and guar-antee a child’s well-being? What role do guardians ad litem and independent experts play in family court pro-ceedings? Who helps to uphold the rights of children who have been circumcised or have had their sexual organs operated on in another way? How do professionals ensure they treat children empathetically in youth and family court proceedings? How do children feel when they are taken away from their parents or foster parents? In this handbook, Rainer Balloff, who works as an independent consultant in court, reveals from a practical per-spective how a child’s well-being can be upheld and how children can be protected effectively in such situations.
