Content: "Whether it is education, health or consumption, data is now gathered about just about every aspect of our person and behavior. This creates a society of asterisks, scores, likes and lists, in which everything and everyone is constantly measured and evaluated. This starts at the annual university campus, reaches over the quantified self-movement of fitness-minded metropolises, which compare their best times over the Internet, to the assessment of the efficiency of political measures. Steffen Mau examines the techniques of this new sociometry and shows its consequences. The evaluation systems of the quantified society, according to his central thought, do not simply represent the inequalities in the world, but are ultimately decisive in the distribution of life chances." -- rough translation of the cover

Content: "The protests of '1968' have become a powerful symbol of generational belonging and central to the western world's collective memory. In many European countries, the '68ers' have been transformed into a mythical yardstick of what contitutes a generation. Yet few people thought of themselves in this way in the late 1960s: the idea of the '68er' only emerged from complex and often retrospective processes of generational building, both within countries and at an international level. Often labelled the first 'global generation', the term '68er' may have entered the vernacular across Europe, but what it entailed in different political and cultural contexts warrants examination. Were the '68ers' a pan-European phenomenon or did different generational entities emerge from national debates and discourses? The articles collected here examine the idea of a '68er' generation in West Germany, elsewhere in Western Europe, and in countries formerly behind the Iron Curtain. They address how activists - and those who observed them - made sense of those events at the time, how the idea of a generational experience was mobilized politically to powerful effect in the years that followed, and why the '68ers' have become the generation against which all others are measured in some countries, but not in others."--Publisher's description

Content: The book focuses on the consequences of post-communist transformation for women in Eastern Germany and evaluates their responses. In the GDR era, women were required to take on employment while the state provided child care and financial incentives for mothers. Since the duty to work applied to men as well as women, women did not perceive their situation as disadvantaged or gender as a barrier to their socio-economic participation. Gender was not linked with inequality and there was no feminist discourse, although the hidden reality was that womens issues lagged behind those of men. In the post-communist era gender emerged as a new divide. While the politicians had expected Eastern German women would focus on their families, they confounded policy-makers by refusing to regard homemaking as an acceptable lifestyle. However, since unification women have had fewer employment opportunities and lower job security, gender has been reinvented in two ways: a sense of injustice among women and their bid for labour market inclusion, and the experience of unfamiliar barriers to employment on the grounds of gender. In recasting their biographies by postponing marriage and childbirth and developing new strategies of risk-management to retain their place in the newly competitive labour market, women are trying to avoid the pitfalls of gender and take advantage of the opportunities in the post-communist setting. Content: "Traditionally, data has been a scarce commodity which, given its value, has been either jealously guarded or expensively traded. In recent years, technological developments and political lobbying have turned this position on its head. Data now flow as a deep and wide torrent, are low in cost and supported by robust infrastructures, and are increasingly open and accessible. A data revolution is underway, one that is already reshaping how knowledge is produced, business conducted, and governance enacted, as well as raising many questions concerning surveillance, privacy, security, profiling, social sorting, and intellectual property rights. In contrast to the hype and hubris of much media and business coverage, The Data Revolution provides a synoptic and critical analysis of the emerging data landscape."--Excerpted from publisher's description

- "Bildung" in a broad comprehension can be defined as the development of personality and as a process, which lasts from birth or before birth until death. Experience, ability and knowledge are collected a whole life long: this is what "Bildung" is. The development of personality is as well intransitive as transitive: on the one hand a personality or individual develops itself, on the other hand many persons and institutions influence the formation of a person. In public and political discussions the term "Bildung" is under a constricted perception, the usual meaning of it is "Bildung" at schools. The organizational part of "Bildung" is in the center of these discussions, the non-organized influences and parts of the development of the personality are usually missing. The reasons for the failure of desired changes in the system of school education are the deficient understanding of "Bildung" and the ignorance of major relationships. An example of such a failure is the so called "Bildungsvolksbegehren" from 2011 and its demands, which will be discussed in this thesis.
