Series Statement: Helden - Heroisierungen - Heroismen 13
Mit Beiträgen von Achim Aurnhammer, Chen Zhuangying, Cong Tingting, Fan Jieping, Olmo Gölz, Joachim Grage, He Zhiyuan, Huang Liaoyu, Hu Chunchun, Hu Kai, Sara Kathrin Landa, Stefanie Lethbridge, Lin Chunjie, Dieter Martin, Isabell Oberle, Dominik Pietzcker, Nicola Spakowski, Jennifer Stapornwongkul, Wang Zhiqiang, Wei Yuquing, Xie Juan, Zhang Fan, Zhu Jianhua, Ulrike Zimmermann
Content: This volume elucidates the changing relationship between heroization and othering in a German-Chinese cultural comparison. Intercultural case studies illustrate which representatives of German culture and history were subjected to a process of heroization or were disparaged as negative anti-heroes in Chinese culture. Vice versa, Chinese figures who adopted a corresponding heroic or antiheroic function within the German-speaking world are also examined. This German-Chinese dialogue, in which cultural scientists from Germany and China participate, is guided by the assumption that processes of heroization and de-heroization represent paradigmatic focal points in the economics of intercultural transfer. The relationship between individual and collective heroism and the meaning of alienness - be it of Chinese or German characteristics - when importing heroes offer new perspectives insofar as these importations prove to be complex and inconsistent. With contributions by Achim Aurnhammer, Chen Zhuangying, Cong Tingting, Fan Jieping, Olmo Gölz, Joachim Grage, He Zhiyuan, Huang Liaoyu, Hu Chunchun, Hu Kai, Sara Kathrin Landa, Stefanie Lethbridge, Lin Chunjie, Dieter Martin, Isabell Oberle, Dominik Pietzcker, Nicola Spakowski, Jennifer Stapornwongkul, Wang Zhiqiang, Wei Yuquing, Xie Juan, Zhang Fan, Zhu Jianhua, Ulrike Zimmermann

Content: In recent decades, special effects have become a major new area of research in cinema studies. For the most part, they have been examined as spectacles or practical tools. In contrast, Special Effects and German Silent Film, foregrounds their function as an expressive device and their pivotal role in cinema's emergence as a full-fledged art. Special effects not only shaped the look of iconic films like Nosferatu (1922) or Metropolis (1927), but they are central to a comprehensive understanding of German silent film culture writ large. This book examines special effects as the embodiment of a 'techno-romantic' paradigm that seeks to harness technology-the epitome of modern materialism-as a means for accessing a spiritual realm. Employed to visualize ideas and emotions in a medium-specific way, special effects thus paved the way for film art.

Series Statement: Film Culture in Transition
Content: Unlike most studies of the relationship between cinema and art, which privilege questions of medium or institutional specificity and intermediality, Screening the Art World explores the ways in which artists and the art world more generally have been represented in cinema. Contributors address a rarely explored subject -art in cinema, rather than the art of cinema - by considering films across genres, historical periods and national cinemas in order to reflect on cinema's fluctuating imaginary of 'art' and 'the art world'. The book examines the intersection of art history with history in cinema, cinema's simultaneous affirmation and denigration of the idea of art as 'truth' and what this means for cinema's understanding of itself, the dominant, often contradictory ways in which artists have been represented on screen, and cinematic representations of the art world's tenuous position between commercial good and cultural capital.

Content: Perpetrator Cinema explores a new trend in the cinematic depiction of genocide that has emerged in Cambodian documentary in the late twentieth- and early twenty-first centuries. While past films documenting the Holocaust and genocides in Yugoslavia, Rwanda, and elsewhere have focused on collecting and foregrounding the testimony of survivors and victims, the intimate horror of the autogenocide enables post–Khmer Rouge Cambodian documentarians to propose a direct confrontation between the first-generation survivor and the perpetrator of genocide. These films break with Western tradition and disrupt the political view that reconciliation is the only legitimate response to atrocities of the past. Rather, transcending the perpetrator’s typical denial or partial confession, this extraordinary form of “duel” documentary creates confrontational tension and opens up the possibility of a transformation in power relations, allowing viewers to access feelings of moral resentment.Raya Morag examines works by Rithy Panh, Rob Lemkin and Thet Sambath, and Lida Chan and Guillaume Suon, among others, to uncover the ways in which filmmakers endeavor to allow the survivors’ moral status and courage to guide viewers to a new, more complete understanding of the processes of coming to terms with the past. These documentaries show how moral resentment becomes a way to experience, symbolize, judge, and finally incorporate evil into a system of ethics. Morag’s analysis reveals how perpetrator cinema provides new epistemic tools and propels the recent social-cultural-psychological shift from the era of the witness to the era of the perpetrator

Content: "Wim Wenders: Making Films That Matter is the first book in fifteen years to take a comprehensive look at Wim Wenders's extensive filmography. In addition to offering new insights into his cult masterpieces, the ten essays in this volume highlight the thematic and aesthetic continuities between his early films and his latest productions. Wenders's films have much to contribute to current conversations on intermediality, whether it be through his adaptations of important literary works or his filmic reinventions of famous paintings by Edward Hopper or Andrew Wyeth. Wenders has also positioned himself as a decidedly transnational and translingual filmmaker taking on the challenge of representing peripheral spaces without falling into the trap of a neo-colonial gaze. Making Films That Matter argues that Wenders remains a true innovator in both his experiments in 3D filmmaking and his attempts to define a visual poetics of peace"

Content: "Over the past three decades, the study of the film soundtrack has developed into a rich scholarly discipline, characterized by diverse approaches and methodologies drawn from such disciplines as musicology, music theory, film and media studies, and sound studies. Yet, despite the diversity of approaches, the logic of the soundtrack and the relationship among its various components remains underexplored and undertheorized. The voice has long been an object of focus of many theoretical approaches to sound in cinema. But because of the way it relates to meaning and hierarchy, "voice" is also a useful metaphorical conceit for thinking about relations within the soundtrack. "Voice" can have multiple meanings when considering the integrated soundtrack and its position in the history of film music and sound. This volume builds on existing scholarship on music and film sound, with particular attention to the concepts of the voice in cinema, vococentrism, and the integrated soundtrack. What is the cinematic significance of the singing voice? How do music and dialogue interact in cinema? To what extent, if any, is silent film vococentric? Is vococentrism still a useful category to apply to conetmporary postclassical film? These are some of the questions the essays in this volume will address"--

Content: Performing Brains on Screen deals with film enactments and representations of the belief that human beings are essentially their brains, a belief that embodies one of the most influential modern ways of understanding the human. Films have performed brains in two chief ways: by turning physical brains into protagonists, as in the "brain movies" of the 1950, which show terrestrial or extra-terrestrial disembodied brains carrying out their evil intentions; or by giving brains that remain unseen inside someone's head an explicitly major role, as in brain transplantation films or their successors since the 1980s, in which brain contents are transferred and manipulated by means of information technology. Through an analysis of filmic genres and particular movies, Performing Brains on Screen documents this neglected filmic universe, and demonstrates how the cinema has functioned as a cultural space where a core notion of the contemporary world has been rehearsed and problematized.

Content: Fully revised and updated, Archival Storytelling second edition is a timely, pragmatic look at the use of audiovisual materials available to filmmakers and scholars, from the earliest photographs of the 19th century to the work of media makers today. Whether you're a top Hollywood filmmaker or a first-time documentarian, at some point you are going to want to find, use, and license third-party materials--images, audio, or music that you yourself did not create--to use them in your work. This book explains what's involved in researching and licensing visuals and music, and exactly what media makers need to know when filming in a world crowded with rights-protected images and sounds. Filled with insights from filmmakers, archivists, and intellectual property experts, this second edition defines key terms such as copyright, fair use, public domain, and orphan works. It guides readers through the complex archival process and challenges them to become not only archival users but also archival and copyright activists. This book is an essential resource for both students and professionals, from seasoned filmmakers to those creating their first projects, offering practical advice for how to effectively and ethically draw on the wealth of cultural materials that surround us.
