Theorien der Behavioral Labor Economics weichen vom Standardmodell der Ökonomie ab und stellen insbesondere die diesem Standardmodell zugrunde liegende Annahme von rationalen und egoistischen Entscheidern – der Annahme des Homo oeconomicus – infrage. Sie unterstellen Handlungsweisen, die nicht nur von Egoismus, sondern auch von Fairness und Reziprozität geleitet sind.Die Arbeit führt eine empirische Analyse durch, um diese Theorien hinsichtlich ihrer Aussagekraft für reale Arbeitsverhältnisse zu überprüfen. Dazu wird das Verhalten von Arbeitnehmern mit Methoden der empirischen Wirtschaftsforschung in Feld und Experiment untersucht. Der Autor findet in seiner Feldforschung Bestätigung für die These, dass die wirtschaftliche Realität nicht vom Menschenbild des Homo oeconomicus dominiert wird. Gleichzeitig übt er Kritik an den etablierten Methoden der experimentellen Wirtschaftsforschung
