Series Statement: Studies in German literature, linguistics and culture
Content: "Twenty-five years after the demise of the German Democratic Republic, there is perhaps more scholarship being produced on that country than ever. This is true also in literary studies, but especially in English-language literary scholarship there has been a strong imbalance toward a focus on the last three decades of GDR literature. The literature of the earlier GDR has mostly been dismissed or ignored, as the discontinuities between the early and late GDR have been emphasized over the considerable continuities. This book seeks to redress that state of affairs, examining the literature produced from the very beginnings of what became the GDR through the 1950s." --

Series Statement: The Russia-Ukraine war Volume 1
Content: The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 jeopardizes the country's independence and its chances for Western-style development. However, the heroic attitude of the Ukrainian people, combined with a solidifying national identity, makes the domestic foundations for a western turn stronger than ever. After the invasion, building strong foundations of liberal democracy will be a top priority. In addition to alleviating immediate problems, the country must also address its post-communist legacy and address the constraints of patronalism. The authors of this edited volume, leading Ukrainian scholars supplemented by colleagues from Hungary, examine the chances of an anti-patronal transformation after the war. The book provides an overview of the development of Ukraine's political-economic system: color revolutions in 2004 and 2014 brought democratic transformation, but no change in the patronage system The result was patronal regime cycles instead of the emergence of a Western-type liberal democracy in the country. The twelve chapters examine the impact of the war on patronal democracy, the relational economy, clientelist society, and the international environment in which Ukraine operates.

Content: When electronic digital computers first appeared after World War II, they appeared as a revolutionary force. Business management, the world of work, administrative life, the nation state, and soon enough everyday life were expected to change dramatically with these machines’ use. Ever since, diverse prophecies of computing have continually emerged, through to the present day. As computing spread beyond the US and UK, such prophecies emerged from strikingly different economic, political, and cultural conditions. This volume explores how these expectations differed, assesses unexpected commonalities, and suggests ways to understand the divergences and convergences. This book examines thirteen countries, based on source material in ten different languages – the effort of an international team of scholars. In addition to analyses of debates, political changes, and popular speculations, we also show a wide range of pictorial representations of “the future with computers.”

Content: "In light of Britain's impending departure from the European Union [EU], Helmut Schmidt's damning verdict on British attitudes towards post-war Europe seems as potent today as when the former West German Chancellor first uttered these words in a public lecture at Yale more than thirty years ago. Ever since the late 1940s, tensions over European integration have overshadowed an otherwise flourishing post-war relationship between Britain and the Federal Republic of Germany. After Britain's initial refusal in the 1950s to join the emerging European institutions such as the European Coal and Steel Community [ECSC] or the European Economic Community [EEC] from the outset, Germany's subsequent reluctance to back Britain's two membership applications in 1961-3 and 1967 against French resistance foreshadowed many of the dynamics that cloud the bilateral relationship to this day. Though Britain eventually did join the European Communities [EC] in 1973, its open scepticism towards new European initiatives such as direct elections to the European Parliament or the European Monetary System [EMS] continued to compromise British-German relations during much of Schmidt's chancellorship in the 1970s; developments that were not helped by Britain's attempts to renegotiate its terms of membership in 1974-75, or by its fight to reduce its EC budget contributions from the late 1970s onwards. The 1990s then saw British-German tensions over Europe reach new heights."--

Content: In public discourse, school violence is often sensationalised and associated with a worrisome brutalisation of society. Many historians, on the other hand, see schools as the locus of the general civilisation of West German society after National Socialism. Taking these contradicting views as a starting point, the article examines school violence between the early 1970s and the turn of the century. It proposes going beyond the competing theses of brutalisation and civilisation and taking a more in-depth look at the changing conceptions of what ›violence‹ actually is and how it can be overcome. Since the 1970s, the forms of violence associated with schools have multiplied. The discovery of ever more varied shapes and shades of violence was intimately linked to new ideas and programmes seeking to abolish violence in the schools and classrooms. At the same time, however, these new initiatives drastically increased the demands on schools and educators. Some teachers and parents experienced the new demands positively, as part of a quest for a new democratic form of schooling, but many of them also felt increasingly steamrolled and overwhelmed by the task of freeing education from violence.

Content: While Crises are omnipresent in history and historiography, the meaning of the concept of „Crisis“ is becoming more elusive than ever. The new article by Rüdiger Graf and Konrad H. Jarausch scrutinizes how historians use the concept with respect to contemporary history, the twentieth century, and modernity in general. After briefly sketching the conceptual history of "crisis," the article addresses the questions of how the concept structures historiographical narratives, what types of crises historians distinguish, and, considering its vagueness, suggestive power, and political instrumentalization, if we should retain the concept or refrain from using it.

Content: Dispersal, or 'bussing', was introduced in England in the early-1960s after white parents expressed concerns that the sudden influx of non-Anglophone South Asian children was holding back their own children's education. It consisted in sending busloads of mostly Asian children to predominantly white suburban schools in an effort to 'spread the burden' and to promote linguistic and cultural integration. Although seemingly well-intentioned, dispersal proved a failure: it was based on racial identity rather than linguistic deficiency and ultimately led to an increase in segregation, as bussed pupils were daily confronted with racial bullying in dispersal schools. This is the first ever book on English bussing, based on an in-depth study of local and national archives, alongside interviews with formerly-bussed pupils decades later.

    Uniform Title: Crepúsculo en Budapest
Content: Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, a new regime emerged in Hungary that bears striking resemblances to the long-gone one-party communist system. The return to power of Viktor Orbán, who became the champion of ultra-nationalist populism, degraded the Hungarian institutions to the point of turning a young democracy into a thinly disguised autocratic regime. In this personal chronicle, Luis G. Prado, who began visiting Budapest more than two decades ago and, falling in love with the Hungarian capital, moved to live there with his family, asks himself whether the time has come to leave Hungary. Is the political evolution towards authoritarianism in Hungary irreversible? Will the Orbán regime ever find its final form? How did it reach this point in a member state of the European Union, which is a club of democracies, no less?

Content: The images are blurred and a bit chaotic, as they often are in on-the-spot videos of fast-moving events circulating on social media. But the gist of the story is clear. Three men clad in dark face masks and combat gear, their identities hidden behind their uniform exterior and emotionless body language, are rounding up a crowd of women. The women are fighting back, trying to break out of the cordon. Suddenly the three men in camouflage retreat. One holds his mask in his hand and looks distressed. They walk away quickly, the crowd whistles after them. What happened? The answer rests with a 73-year old great-grandmother who is a celebrity of the Belarusian protests. Fearlessly she demonstrates, scolds and sometimes kicks the security forces. And she always attempts to take off their masks—this time successfully. Belarusian security police do not like to show their face while shoving around women. And the Belarusian women know this. They have been coming out onto the street in ever increasing numbers to continue the fight against an entrenched dictatorship, inspired by their three female leaders, who are not career politicians, but ordinary women, some with husbands and children, all of them with aspirations. In the following, three scholars have a look at the question of how to explain the female presence on the Belarusian streets and what it means both in the short and in the long term. The articles were written on the day of mass arrests of women in Minsk. The future is uncertain. Mass violence is on the cards as much as the possibility of a Lukashenko retreat. Whatever it will be, however, it deserves the world’s attention.
