Deutsche Erstveröffentlichung einer Ballade von R.L. Stevenson, übersetzt und illustriert von H. Wagenbreth (vgl. u.a. das von ihm bebilderte afrikanische Märchen "Mond und Morgenstern", BA 8/99). Erzählt wird die Geschichte zweier böser Buben mit Namen Robin und Ben. Rob ist frech und dreist, er wird Pirat und führt ein in jeder Hinsicht erfolgreiches wüstes Seeräuberleben. Ben ist ein eher Stiller, er schleimt herum, wird Apotheker, "ist gemein auf feine Weise", gibt z.B. einem Kind für die todkranke Mutter Wasser statt Arznei in die Flasche und nimmt dafür Gold. Als sich Rob und Ben nach Jahren wiedersehen und vergleichen, was ein jeder erreicht hat (und wie), kommt es "zum gewaltigen Showdown" (Verlag). Wagenbreth hat die Story mit Illustrationen von expressiver Ausgelassenheit kongenial in Szene gesetzt. Alle Farben, vor allem Rot, Schwarz und Gelb, haben überwältigend kraftvolle Auftritte. Mit plakativen Formen sind Menschen, Gegenstände, Landschaft hingestellt. Passend die fette Druckschrift in Schwarz. Ein besonderes Buch, das sich größere Bibliotheken leisten sollten.
