Content: A reconceptualised edition of the prescient bestseller, first published in 1982, that alerted the public to the likely impacts of information technologies and the emergence of a post-industrial society. When Sleepers, Wake! was first released in Australia, it immediately became influential around the world- it was read by Deng Xiaoping and Bill Gates; was published in China, Japan, South Korea, and Sweden; and led to the author being the first Australian minister invited to address a G-7 summit meeting, held in Canada in 1985. Now its author, the polymath and former politician Barry Jones, turns his attention to what has happened since - especially to work, class, social relationships, and climate in the digital age - and to the challenges faced by increasingly fragile democracies and public institutions. Jones sees climate change as the greatest problem of our time, especially because political leaders are incapable of dealing with complex, long-term issues of such magnitude. Meanwhile, technologies such as the smartphone and the ubiquity of social media have reinforced the realm of the personal. This has weakened our sense of, or empathy with, 'the other', the remote, the unfamiliar, and all but destroyed our sense of community, of being members of broad, inclusive groups. In the post-truth era, politicians invent 'facts' and ignore or deny the obvious, while business and the media are obsessed with marketing and consumption for the short term. Sleepers, Wake! Revisited is a long-awaited update on such challenges of modernity

Content: " Nebula, Locus, and Alex Award-winner P. Djèlí Clark goes full-length for the first time in his dazzling debut novel Cairo, 1912: Though Fatma el-Sha'arawi is the youngest woman working for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities, she's certainly not a rookie, especially after preventing the destruction of the universe last summer. So when someone murders a secret brotherhood dedicated to one of the most famous men in history, al-Jahiz, Agent Fatma is called onto the case. Al-Jahiz transformed the world forty years ago when he opened up the veil between the magical and mundane realms, before vanishing into the unknown. This murderer claims to be al-Jahiz, returned to condemn the modern age for its social oppressions. His dangerous magical abilities instigate unrest in the streets of Cairo that threaten to spill over onto the global stage. Alongside her Ministry colleagues and a familiar person from her past, Agent Fatma must unravel the mystery behind this imposter to restore peace to the city or face the possibility he could be exactly who he seems... Novellas by P. Djèlí Clark The Black God's Drums The Haunting of Tram Car 015 Ring Shout The Dead Djinn Universe contains stories set primarily in Clark's fantasy alternate Cairo, and can be enjoyed in any order. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied. "
Content: Biographisches: "Born in New York and raised mostly in Houston, P. DJÈLÍ CLARK spent the formative years of his life in the homeland of his parents, Trinidad and Tobago. P. Djèlí Clark is the author of the novellas The Black God's Drums, winner of a 2019 Alex Award from the American Library Association,The Haunting of Tram Car 015,and A Dead Djinn in Cairo. He is loosely associated with the quarterly FIYAH: A Magazine of Black Speculative Fiction and an infrequent reviewer at Strange Horizons. He currently resides in New England and ruminates on issues of diversity in speculative fiction." Rezension(2): "Publishers Weekly, Starred Review: Clark reconfigures history with a keen, critical eye toward gender, class, and imperialism. An epic tale of magic and mystery, this is sure to wow. " Rezension(3): "Hugo Award winner Alix E. Harrow, author of The Ten Thousand Doors of January : A Master of Djinn is everything you might expect from Clark: cinematic action, a radical reimagining of real history, and magic on every page. I loved it." Rezension(4): "Mary Robinette Kowal, Hugo and Nebula award-winning author of The Calculating Stars : A Master of Djinn has all the tricky twists I want in a police procedural and all the djinns, magic and wonder I want from fantasy." Rezension(5): "Django Wexler, author of The Thousand Names :Fascinating! I love the intricate alt-history world of A Master of Djinn , with its hints at the changed destinies of nations and ordinary people alike after the cataclysmic return of magic to the world. Clark gives us an engaging mystery with a wonderful mix of the fantastic and the mundane, chain-smoking crocodile gods, stuffy marid librarians, and a brilliant heroine with a dashing bowler." Rezension(6): "〈a href=http://lj.libraryjournal.com/ target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/libraryjournal_logo.png alt=Library Journal border=0 /〉〈/a〉: December 1, 2020 Forty years ago, mystic/inventor Al-Jahiz sundered the veil dividing worlds, letting magic seep into this world while vanishing into the beyond. Djinns now flit about 1912 Cairo while the Egyptian Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities strives to keep the peace. Then someone claiming to be Al-Jahiz wipes out the secret brotherhood protecting his legacy, and ministry agent Fatma el-Sha'arawi gets busy. From Nebula, Locus, and Alex Award winner Clark. Copyright 2020 Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. " Rezension(7): "〈a href=https://www.booklistonline.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/booklist_logo.png alt=Booklist border=0 /〉〈/a〉: March 15, 2021 In 1912, forty years after the mystic al-Jahiz put a hole through the realities that allowed djinn to enter our world, Cairo is a bustling metropolis with commerce, intrigue, and steampunk technology. The Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments, and Supernatural Entities keeps the peace between humans and everyone else in the city. When someone claiming to be al-Jahiz stirs up trouble in advance of a summit of world powers, Agent Fatma el-Sha'arawi, the young and capable ministry employee with a penchant for dressing like an English gentleman (introduced in A Dead Djinn in Cairo, 2016), is called in and paired with a determined new academy graduate, Hadia Abdel Hafez. As al-Jahiz fans the flames of unrest and manifests the ability to control djinn, Fatma and her allies, including her inscrutable love interest Siti, rush to identify and stop their foe before the world is destroyed. Clark deftly explores colonialism and the history of Cairo with an immersive setting that acts as another character in this delightful combination of mystery, fantasy, and romance. Give this to alternate history enthusiasts and mystery readers who enjoy a dose of the magical. Fans of S. A. Chakraborty, Martha Wells, and Zen Cho should be particularly pleased.
