Series Statement: Ecological Studies volume 238
Content: This volume explores major wetland ecosystem services, such as climate cooling and water quality improvement, and discusses the recent wetland conservation and restoration activities in China and neighboring countries. The role of wetlands in either cooling or warming the climate is analyzed as the net balance between carbon sequestration and emissions of methane and nitrous oxide. Wetlands start off having a net warming effect on the climate but in time switch to net cooling. Further, they remove 40% of the N and P from run-off and groundwater flow in agricultural areas, but wetlands need to amount to 10% of the total catchment area to make a difference. Reflecting on the recent large investment in wetland ecological studies in China and neighboring countries, the book addresses invasive species in coastal wetlands as well as the protection and wise use of tidal flats around the Yellow Sea. It also presents promising regional case studies on wetland restoration. The book is intended for academics, students and practitioners in the field of wetland ecology, management and restoration, as well as consultants and professionals working in conservation, wise use and environmental policy.

Content: "The thirteen papers in this collection expose a variety of current issues in higher education mainly in Europe but also in the United States. They address competition, collaboration, and complementarity on the level of policy and on the more practical level of impact on students and staff. Competition occurs between and within institutions: funding is usually what's at stake, albeit indirectly. Collaboration, more than a basic code of conduct, has become a political principle across Europe, one that aims to capitalise on the complementarity of the higher education market in the area. Covering a broad geographic range, these papers examine the current manifestations of the Three C-s (Competition, Collaboration, and Complementarity) in a variety of themes and contexts. These include the missions and identities of universities, their response to external forces, the impact of evaluation systems and ranking schemes, the effects of globalisation on European universities, issues of intercultural awareness, gender imbalance, and the challenges of student participation. Scores of statistical tables and visual aids provide evidence for the analysis and arguments of the authors. This book is the fifth in a series of publications drawn from the annual Forums of the European Association of Institutional Research (EAIR) from 2013 onwards"--
