Content: Is it permissible to kill an innocent person against her will in order to prevent several other innocent persons from being killed against their will? The answer to which this essay comes after extensive discussion is - under certain conditions and limitations - affirmative. On the way to this answer, the book offers a comprehensive in-depth discussion of so-called deontic restrictions - that is, the idea of an action's being prohibited in circumstances in which performing it once would be the only way to prevent its being performed multiple times. The book's leading question is whether there is a plausible rationale for deontic restrictions. To this effect, a taxonomy and critical discussions of the most important approaches to justify deontic restrictions are provided - where many of these approaches undergo a deeper examination for the first time ever. In addition, the book clarifies some adjoining questions, such as why deontic restrictions are often perceived as being problematic or how the concept of agent-relativity should best be understood and formalized. Put into broader perspective, the conclusions offered should have a bearing on a number of debates in normative ethics, not least on the debate between deontologists and consequentialist

Uniform Title: Transgressing boundaries? Jesuits, astrology and culture in Portugal (1590-1759)
Content: "Connections between the Society of Jesus and astrology used to appear as unexpected at best. Astrology was never viewed favourably by the Church, especially in early modern times, and since Jesuits were strong defenders of Catholic orthodoxy, most historians assumed that their religious fervour would be matched by an equally strong rejection of astrology. This groundbreaking and compelling study brings to light new Jesuit scientific texts revealing a much more positive, practical, and nuanced attitude. What emerges forcefully is a totally new perspective into early modern Jesuit culture, science, and education, highlighting the element that has been long overlooked: astrology"--

Content: Innovation managers and innovation scholars increasingly emphasize the open innovation model, introduced by Henry Chesbrough in 2003. This model postulates that the innovation process should be flexible and cross organizational boundaries, which enables the transfer of knowledge and capabilities between organizations. However, until now, it remained unclear which types of firms apply open innovation, whether it realy raises their performance, and how this can be managed in the best way. This book addresses the important issue how innovative firms profit from external knowledge to improve their innovation performance. Using large scale empirical evidence from the Dutch industry, this book shows that especially Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) and firms from low-tech sectors have increasingly adopted open innovation strategies over the period 1994-2004, and are clearly catching up large and high-tech firms. The results indicate that firms pursuing an open innovation strategy perform better with regard to innovation than firms that innovate exclusively in-house. In contrast to the common opinion that large Mergers & Acquisitions (M&As) are bad for innovation, it turns out that M&As have a positive impact on long-term innovation performance. In times of economic cricis this can be an extra argument for governments to back large scale M&As. Large (medium) high-tech M&As in the life sciences industry were analysed in-depth, to investigate the dynamics of post M&A integration. This book shows the different types of innovation synergies that can be expected from M&As and how they can be realized by systematic post M&A integration. Finally, this book studies how innovation brokers fulfill essential roles in innovation networks of SMEs in the agri-food sector. It provides guidelines for managers in innovation networks to improve the performance of these networks

Content: At the end of the 5th millennium BCE, some of the vastest settlements of the time emerged on the forest steppe north of the Black Sea. The largest of these sites were found between the Southern Bug and Dnieper river. There they occur only tens of kilometres apart and are assumed to be partly coeval. The Trypillia ‘mega-sites’ reached sizes of up to 320 hectares with up to 3000 buildings in one place. During their peak times as many as 11,000 people could have lived in one of those settlements. But how did people come together in these Trypillia ‘mega-sites’ with several thousand dwellings? How long were such sites inhabited, and how many people lived there? Were these settlements the first towns, preceding the Mesopotamian development? To address these questions, this book presents the results of the investigations at the Maidanets'ke ‘mega-site’. To date, Maidanets'ke represents the most complex of these enormous sites and is also among the best investigated ones. Based on new excavations by international teams, the settlement’s history, its structure and regional context are addressed. The excavation results, with features like a pottery production site, a causewayed enclosure and several dwellings, are presented in detail. An extensive radiocarbon dating program conducted on various parts of the site, in combination with pottery studies, revealed several phases of continuous occupation between 3990-3640 cal BCE. According to the number of contemporary structures, the demography of a ‘mega-site’ is reconstructed in detail for the first time. Targeted geophysical surveys in the core area of the ‘mega-site’ phenomenon show that exceptional non-inhabited buildings and so-called mega-structures occur regularly in both larger and smaller settlements. Overall, the Trypillia settlement system appears scalable, with small sites being structurally similar to larger ones. With no clear differences in the settlement pattern except size, the urban character of ‘mega-sites’ is called into question

Uniform Title: Hospitals and deaths in the Northeast of France during the Middle ages and Modern times : archeo-anthropological analysis of hospital cemeteries
Content: The story of medieval and modern hospitals remained for a long time the privilege of the historians and the art historians. Their works have delivered numerous informations, both on their charitable vocation and on their financial organization, also helping to understand the details of the everyday life. The recent discovery of several Hospital cemeteries led to us to start by contemplating this study in a transdisciplinary way and by including an archeo-anthropological reflection, to answer questions, which until then remained unsolved. These specific funeral contexts have, up to now never been studied. Our main objectives were to try to characterize at best the subjects welcomed in hospitals, by analyzing both the funeral practice and biology. Our research focused on four medieval and modern sites of the northeast of France. Our study showed that certain characteristics were similar from one cemetery to another, particularly the funeral practice and recruitment. The first ones indeed remain rather simple, without particular structure like sarcophagus or vault. The buried appear to be similar from a site to another, with a weak number of children and a sanitary state which does not differ from what was discovered in other contexts. The presence of multiple graves on three of these sites (Troyes, Verdun and Epinal) permitted us to acknowledge evidence of a few major crisis, and thus understand the difference in the management of such an event by a medieval hospital or by a modern one

Uniform Title: Representations and functions of the exile from Spain to France and the economic emigration to Germany during the XXth century in spanish literature of the XXIst century
Content: This work means to study the representations that are illustrated in novels about the exile from Spain to France and about economic emigration (1960-1970) to France and especially to Germany. Those themes have been mostly dealt with in Spanish literature since the Javier Cercas’ best seller publication, Soldados de Salamina. Javier Cercas greatly influenced the narratives about exile and emigration thanks to such use as investigation method for example. Those works afford an essential additional information with regard to historians research on exile and emigration. Finally, these narrative representations, sometimes in harmony and other times in discrepancy concerning those found in previous literature, aim at the same purpose: understanding the present immigration to Spain, and therefore, understanding the Other and their own identity

Content: Dating advertisements having greathly increased are a reliable source of material for social sciences research studies. Through the presentation of the self and the descritpion of the other appearing in the advertisements the dominant models of feminity and masculinity emerge. In our research we compared the advertisements published intwo different societies (russian and french) at two different times (1994 and 1997). The principal results of our study show that the way in which the advertiser describes himself as an individual and the way in which he describes the sexual roles are shaped by the models which the society puts at his disposal. In this manner, the individual tries to create the best impression for the other by reproducing the socially enhanced model. We also illustrate that the radical social change necessarily causes a transformation in the images of the sexual roles and this is particulary flagrant in the portrayal of the female

Content: This book critically examines how Walt Disney Animation Studios has depicted - and sometimes failed to depict - different forms of harming and objectifying non-human animals in their films. Each chapter addresses a different form of animal harm and objectification through the theories of speciesism, romanticism, and the 'collapse of compassion' effect, from farming, hunting and fishing, to clothing, work, and entertainment. Stanton lucidly presents the dichotomy between depictions of higher order, anthropomorphised and neotonised animal characters and that of lower-order species, showing furthermore how these depictions are closely linked to changing social attitudes about acceptable forms of animal harm. An engaging and novel contribution to the field of Critical Animal Studies, this book explores the use of animals not only in Disney's best known animated films such as 101 Dalmatians, but also lesser known features including Home on the Range and Fun and Fancy Free. A quantitative appendix supplying data on how often each animal species appears and the amount of times animal harm or objectification is depicted in over fifty films provides an invaluable resource and addition to scholars working in both Disney and animal studies

Content: Often considered as a minor practice, Western visual poetry is an activity that covers several hundred years. Such longevity is enough to discredit any representation of a secondary, peripheral lyric activity. Allegedly dating back to Hellenistic times, visual poetry is not then structured as a precise genre till the Christian times. Rather, it is a polymorphic activity akin to an epigraphic where closely interwoven sounds are more important than the visual dimension itself and in which the external shape of the poem constitutes the figure. One has to wait till the poetry of Porfyrius Optatianus and the Carolingian times to find, in the West, the first systematic practice of visual poetry. However, this pattern poetry is new in the sense that the figure emerges from the center of the poem and is the result of versi intexti, while refering to theological religious debates about the status of the image and the word in Christian religion. The Renaissance would, be rediscovering the visual poetry of Hellenistic times, produce a new shift in the tradition by putting to the fore the pattern resulting from the external shape of the poem. Baroque Germany was to give to this practice, also present in Italy, its best achievements. On the contrary, quite abruptly, the Enlightenment initiates a period of recession that leads to the disappearing of this first visual practice. Early twenty century visual experiences can therefore be considered entirely new, beginning in the year 1912 with the simultaneous writing of Apollinaire's Caligramms, and Segalen Steles., followed by the new publication in 1914 of Mallarmé's Un Coup de Dès. Modern visual poetry is the result of a series of crises concerning the relation between the sign and the object, between the subject and the world. It has little to do with classical pattern poetry. It is in this perspective that one has to assess the recourse to Eastern calligraphy and the vast diversity of modern visual lyric, especially in the case of Henri Michaux's visual poems or Chistian Dotremont's logograms
