But then Max&rsquo, whole world is turned upside down when Paige suddenly announces some huge news: she&rsquo, engaged and wants Max to be her man of honor. Max was always the romantic one who imagined he would get married before the unpredictable Paige and is shocked to hear she&rsquo, ready to settle down. But it turns out there&rsquo, not just one new man in Paige&rsquo, life&mdash, here are two. There's the groom, Austin, who&rsquo, a perfectly nice guy. Then there's his charming, fun and ridiculously handsome gay younger brother, Chasten, who is Austin's best man. As Paige&rsquo, wedding draws closer, Max, the introverted Midwesterner, and Chasten, the social butterfly East Coaster, realize they&rsquo,e like oil and water. Yet they still have to figure out how to coexist in Paige&rsquo, life while not making her wedding festivities all about them. But can the tiny romantic spark between these two very different guys transform their best man supporting roles into the leading best men in each other&rsquo, lives?"
Content: Rezension(1): "〈a href=http://www.publishersweekly.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/pw_logo.png alt=Publisher's Weekly border=0 /〉〈/a〉: January 2, 2023 “Being gay is not really my forte” declares Max Moody in Karger’s breezy rom-com debut. He’s referring to his lack of interest in party planning, flower arranging, and the like, skills which are put to the test when his best friend, Paige, asks Max to be “man of honor” at her wedding. Infuriatingly, Paige’s future brother-in-law, Chasten—who also happens to be Max’s one-time anonymous hook-up—excels at arranging bachelorette parties and bridal showers. Max fumes as Chasten inserts himself into every aspect of wedding planning and sets out to take down his “best man rival.” As they get to know each other better, however, Max starts fantasizing about his frenemy, especially after Chasten, a chocolatier, takes Max to his factory. Unfortunately, Karger shortchanges the sweet romance to focus instead on drama between Paige and Max: she’s angry when he misses her dress fitting, and he resents her always calling him her “gay best friend.” There’s also an almost pointless subplot about layoffs at Max’s job. Still, the writing is filled with fun pop culture references and Karger can turn a phrase (“I’m hit by the early evening humidity like a nonconsensual embrace”). This appealing debut tries to do too much, but it still offers plenty to enjoy. Agent: Dan Lazar, Writers House. "

As the story changes direction, Kelly allows listeners to reconnect with the romance between these two. The political games heat up, and Kelly, likewise, adds to the intensity. Edition: Unabridged, Young Reader
    ISBN: 9780593415467
Content: " A young reader edition of the New York Times bestseller and National Book Award finalist about one of history's most ruthless and shocking crimes, the Reign of Terror against the Osage people. In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma.160 After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off.160 As the death toll surpassed more than twenty-four Osage, the newly created F.B.I. took up the case, in what became one of the organization's first major homicide investigations. An undercover team, including one of the only Native American agents in the bureau, infiltrated the region, struggling to adopt the latest modern techniques of detection to bring an end to the deadly crime spree. Together with the Osage they began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history. In this youngification of the adult bestseller, critically acclaimed author David Grann revisits the gripping investigation into the shocking crimes against the Osage people. It is a searing indictment of the callousness and prejudice toward Native Americans that allowed the murderers to continue for so long and provides essential information for young readers about a shameful period in U.S. history."
Content: Biographisches: "David Grann is a staff writer at the New Yorker and the bestselling author of The Lost City of Z , which was chosen as one of the best books of the year by the New York Times , ,he Washington Post , and other publications and has been translated into more than twenty-five languages. The work is so rich that it takes three people to perform it. While Ann Marie Lee has a lovely voice, it's too light for the horror she recounts--the murder of dozens of Osage Indians in the 1920s for the purpose of obtaining rights to their oil-rich land in Oklahoma. Will Patton and Danny Campbell, who mainly narrate the investigation by the nascent FBI and the subsequent trial, sound grim and gritty, as befits the story. It's amazing how much history and horror fills this book. Together, the narrators' deliveries are powerful, making it a story listeners will never forget. Kyla Garcia narrates the first section, imbuing facts with feelings while describing the Osage Reign of Terror, a chilling series of murders and outrageous white oppression of oil-rich Osage Native Americans in Oklahoma in the 1920s. In the second section, narrator Jon Lindstrom's deep and gravelly voice fits the perspective of John White, an investigator in the early days of the FBI. He captures White's frustration as he struggles to unearth culpability for many of the Osage murders and the corruption behind them. Joe Ochman narrates the final third, the present-day viewpoint of a journalist who unearths further criminal connections with the benefit of technology as he struggles to capture the past. S.W. Once upon a time, the Osage were considered the wealthiest people per capita in the world, a result of the oil beneath their Oklahoma land. In the 1920s, they became the world's most murdered. Grann's dazzling three-part exposition gets enhanced with a trio presentation. Kyla Garcia helms The Marked Woman, introducing the gruesome murders-the body count hits 24 by section's end,her signature sing-songy narration isn't an ideal fit, making her weakest of the three. Jon Lindstrom follows as FBI agent Tom White, The Evidence Man, solemnly embodying White's fearless tenacity. Joe Ochman is earnestly probing as The Reporter who takes the case not closed to revelatory conclusion. VERDICT Libraries should prepare for younger audiences seeking to supplement the upcoming Martin Scorsese-directed screen adaptation with the book in all formats. " Rezension(5): "〈a href=http://www.publishersweekly.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/pw_logo.png alt=Publisher's Weekly border=0 /〉〈/a〉: Starred review from October 10, 2016 New Yorker staff writer Grann ( The Lost City of Z ) burnishes his reputation as a brilliant storyteller in this gripping true-crime narrative, which revisits a baffling and frightening—and relatively unknown—spree of murders occurring mostly in Oklahoma during the 1920s. From 1921 to 1926, at least two dozen people were murdered by a killer or killers apparently targeting members of the Osage Indian Nation, who at the time were considered “the wealthiest people per capita in the world” thanks to the discovery of oil beneath their lands. The violent campaign of terror is believed to have begun with the 1921 disappearance of two Osage Indians, Charles Whitehorn and Anna Brown, and the discovery of their corpses soon afterwards, followed by many other murders in the next five years. The outcry over the killings led to the involvement in 1925 of an “obscure” branch of the Justice Department, J. Edgar Hoover’s Bureau of Investigation, which eventually charged some surprising figures with the murders. Grann demonstrates how the Osage Murders inquiry helped Hoover to make the case for a “national, more professional, scientifically skilled” police force. Grann’s own dogged detective work reveals another layer to the case that Hoover’s men had never exposed. Agents: Kathy Robbins and David Halpern, Robbins Office. " Rezension(6): "〈a href=http://www.publishersweekly.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/pw_logo.png alt=Publisher's Weekly border=0 /〉〈/a〉: June 5, 2017 Three voice actors divvy up the task of narrating the audio edition of Grann’s saga of the mysterious murders of at least two dozen members of the wealthy Oklahoman Osage Indian nation. Actor Lee reads the first third of the book, entitled “The Marked Woman,” which largely focuses on the story of Mollie Burkhart Lee, an Osage woman whose family was killed off one by one in the early 1920s. Unfortunately her pacing is so slow that the grammatical structure of sentences is often lost, and she uses the same tone whether the subject is serene scenery or vicious murders. Luckily Patton picks up the pace when reading the middle portion of the book, entitled “The Evidence Man,” which chronicles FBI agent Tom White’s struggles to investigate the case. Campbell ultimately steals the show in the third section, “The Reporter,” which follows the man who uncovered the plot to steal the oil-rich Osage territory. He reads in a voice as gruff as the man the chapter is based on, while clearly communicating the complex plot twist that ends this fascinating chunk of American history. A Doubleday hardcover. "

There's no world-saving action as before, but Bernstein wonderfully captures Percy's excitement and sarcastic humor. What ensues is a series of travels through episodes in Annie’s depressing life, and the lessons she has learned from them. But did Annie’s sacrifice save her husband? Now that she’s in Heaven, is there any way for her to know if he lived? Between misunderstandings with her mother and heavy-handed heartbreaks, readers will see these seeds of wisdom coming from miles away. Just as Albom’s themes are rarely morally ambiguous, his prose style is also straightforward, though it’s surprisingly unsentimental. Newcomers to Albom might find his goodness cloying, but fans of the first book will have plenty to appreciate here." Once again, as he narrates his latest work, he proves himself to be just as good a voice actor. Told in the third person, the story casts Albom as an omnipotent narrator, the protagonist, Annie, and a small collection of divinely selected people whom Annie meets in heaven. Albom ensures that no two characters sound alike in tone, tempo, or delivery, and he seamlessly switches between them as well. With its touching message and expert narration, this audiobook is sure to bring some listeners to tears. As a little girl, then as a teen, she struggles with the physical and emotional issues regarding her reattached hand. Annie blames herself for every bad incident in her life. The winds shift as she reconnects with Paulo, her best friend from high school, after years apart. Now Annie and Paulo have just begun a new chapter as a wedded couple. Excitement turns to fear as a terrible tragedy sends them both to the emergency room just hours after the ceremony. When Annie wakes up in heaven, she encounters the five beings that most influenced the course of her life. They skillfully guide her past her self-recriminations to show her the beauty and grace of our interconnected lives. VERDICT Albom's gift for storytelling continues to shine in this sequel to his best-selling The Five People You Meet in Heaven . With true-to-life characters, this quick parable serves as a reminder that through empathy and forgiveness, we can survive our losses. In turn, our troubles are mere beginnings to a future of wonderful possibilities. In this sequel to The Five People You Meet in Heaven (2003), gruff Eddie the maintenance man gets to have a little chat with the aforementioned Annie, for whom he gave up his life in a freak roller-coaster accident in the first book, sparing her from death. So what's she doing up in the afterlife? Well, it seems Annie has fallen in love, married, and then honored the event by going up in a hot air balloon. What is it with her and divergent modes of transportation? And now, thanks to high-tension wires, Annie has bitten the big one--or maybe not--and is wandering around in the clouds reliving past mistakes and holding self-discovery sessions with, yes, five of her predecessors in the dirt nap. You'd think Eddie would be a little ticked that he lost a decade to a woman who seemed destined for the express checkout lane in any case, especially because, Albom writes, She never thought about heaven. He adds, helpfully, But heaven is always thinking about us. Yep, and yuck. There's more than a little of The Little Prince here (A vast brown desert surrounded her. / And she was alone) and more than a little too much wisdom (We don't realize who else we punish while we're punishing ourselves). A question: Isn't it a cheat when one of the dead quintet is a dog? And further: If you avoid death proper but have met your allotted five people in the great fluffy cloud beyond during your near-death experience, do you have to meet five other people when your time actually does come? Isn't that fudging the numbers? For those who prize fortune-cookie philosophy and sticky-sweet resolutions, this is just the ticket to ride. COPYRIGHT(2018) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. (2003), Albom returns with a sequel set 20-odd years into the future. Annie, the little girl Eddie sacrificed his own life in order to save, has grown up. Life has not been without its struggles for Annie, who was left with both a disability and an overly protective mother after the accident at Ruby Pier Amusement Park. However, things appear to be on the upswing as she reunites with and marries Paolo, her childhood sweetheart. Of course, there are no simplistic, happily-ever-after endings in the Albom universe, and Annie and Paolo prove there are no exceptions to that rule. After a horrific accident on her wedding day, Annie is whisked up to heaven, where she not only meets up with Eddie but also four others whose lives she touched and impacted in meaningful ways. As Annie learns her lessons about the meaning and value of both life and death, Albom wraps up this heartfelt fable with a totally unexpected twist. Order plenty of copies and warn r

Content: " Longlisted for the Financial Times Business Book of the Year The rich and gripping true story of the first time machines came for human jobs8212 and how the Luddite uprising explains the power, threat, and toll of big tech and AI today (Naomi Klein) The most urgent story in modern tech begins not in Silicon Valley but two hundred years ago in rural England, when workers known as the Luddites rose up rather than starve at the hands of factory owners who were using automated machines to erase their livelihoods. The Luddites organized guerrilla raids to smash those machines8212 on punishment of death8212 and won the support of Lord Byron, enraged the Prince Regent, and inspired the birth of science fiction. This all-but-forgotten class struggle brought nineteenth-century England to its knees. Today, technology imperils millions of jobs, robots are crowding factory floors, and artificial intelligence will soon pervade every aspect of our economy. How will this change the way we live? And what can we do about it? The answers lie in Blood in the Machine . Brian Merchant intertwines a lucid examination of our current age with the story of the Luddites, showing how automation changed our world8212 and is shaping our future."

In 1812, writes Merchant, the author of The One Device, British workers watched as power looms began to displace them, then rose up in a movement named after a young rebel named Ned Ludd, leading the UK to the brink of civil war. Two centuries later, advanced digital technology in the hands of capitalists threatens human livelihoods in many fields, occasion for a new Luddite revolt. Merchant chronicles how the British militants didn't necessarily object to labor-saving devices, but instead to how they were used--namely, to enrich a small handful of industrialists at the expense of a great mass of skilled workers. Indeed, Merchant adds, when textile workers asked that a machine be put in place to measure thread count, an index of quality, the owners refused, preferring to retain the unilateral power to determine the quality of a garment themselves, and to offer workers the prices they approved of. Under such conditions, weavers' wages fell by nearly half between 1800 and 1811, good reason for protest. At times, those demonstrations turned violent, with factories burned and one particularly hated capitalist murdered. Some reforms ensued, but the supremacy of the bosses endured. Just so, Merchant writes compellingly, while today's gig workers may object to the whims of employers who offer few benefits and jobs that are subject to sudden changes in workload and pay rates, it seems unlikely that those bosses will change their ways short of a mass uprising. After all, Merchant charges, Jeff Bezos determined that it was cheaper to keep emergency technicians on hand to treat heatstroke rather than air-condition some of his warehouses. And since Amazon does it, writes the author, everyone else must make their employees machinelike as well, if they hope to keep pace. A well-argued linkage of early industrial and postindustrial struggles for workers' rights. COPYRIGHT(2023) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. " Rezension(4): "〈a href=https://www.booklistonline.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/booklist_logo.png alt=Booklist border=0 /〉〈/a〉: September 1, 2023 In the early 1800s, textile workers across the north of England faced worsening labor conditions and economic precarity, as the rise of machines began to displace skilled workers. Their response was to form a movement--the so-called Luddite rebellion--to break the machines most culpable for putting them out of work. To the extent that the Luddites are remembered today, they are treated as a punchline: a bunch of unsophisticated rubes who mindlessly opposed the march of progress. But technology journalist Merchant (The One Device, 2017) argues that the Luddites understood very clearly how the new laborsaving machines would be used to undercut their wages, bargaining power, and quality of life, enriching factory bosses at the expense of the workers. Drawing direct parallels to today's tech companies and the government's failure to regulate their exploitative labor practices, Blood in the Machine tells the story of this rebellion and the eventual government repression that put an end to it. As American unions gain power and support, this book is a welcome parable of worker solidarity and resistance. COPYRIGHT(2023) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. " Rezension(5): "〈a href=http://www.publishersweekly.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/pw_logo.png alt=Publisher's Weekly border=0 /〉〈/a〉: September 11, 2023 Journalist Merchant ( The One Device ) offers a stirring account of the Luddites’ “messy rebellion” against new technological innovations in early-19th-century England. Merchant traces the narrative arcs of several groups, including the Luddites, skilled workers in the cloth industry whose lives were irreversibly overhauled by the arrival of new machinery (such as water-powered yarn-spinning machines and looms),the prominent cultural and literary figures, such as Lord Byron, who took an active interest in their grievances, and the factory owners who lived in fear of their nighttime attacks. The portrayal is one deeply sympathetic to the Luddite cause,Merchant is keen to deconstruct the modern, negative connotations of the term “Luddite,” emphasizing that they were driven to act not by some blinding, stubborn hatred of technology, as is often assumed, but rather by a deep understanding of its potential pitfalls and a distaste for the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a small number of privileged overseers. Merchant draws astute comparisons to technology’s disruptions of jobs and livelihoods in the 21st century, using the rise of Uber and AI as prominent examples. This is a significant contribution to the history of the Industrial Revolution and a strong warning against complacency in the face of technological change."
