Content: "From Goethe to Gundolf: Essays on German Literature and Culture is a collection of Roger Paulin’s groundbreaking essays, spanning the last forty years. The work represents his major research interests of Romanticism and the reception of Shakespeare in Germany, but also explores a broader range of themes, from poetry and the public memorialization of poets to fairy stories - all meticulously researched, yet highly accessible. As a comprehensive examination of German literary history in the period 1700-1900, the collection not only includes accounts of the lives and work of Goethe, Schiller, the Schlegels, and Gundolf (amongst others), serving to nuance our understanding of these figures in history, but also considers diverse (and often underexplored) topics, from academic freedom to the rise of travel literature. The essays have been reformulated, corrected, and updated to add references to recent works. However, the core foundations of the originals remain, and just as when they were first published, the value of these essays – to researchers, students, and all those who are interested in German literary history – cannot be overstated."

Note: De Gruyter , Main description: Johann Friedrich Cotta (1764--1832) ist der bedeutendste Verleger der Goethezeit. ANTIQUARIA-Preis für Buchkultur 2004 , Main description: Johann Friedrich Cotta (1764--1832) was the most eminent publisher in the age of Goethe. In only a few years he turned his company into the leading publishing house of German "National Literature" and the biggest general publisher of his age by publishing writers such as Goethe, Schiller, Hölderlin, Jean Paul, Herder, Varnhagen von Ense, Alexander von Humboldt, Fichte, Schelling and Hegel. For the first time, this bibliography records the development of the Cotta Verlag under the guidance of Johann Friedrich Cotta. A total of 2,246 entries list every edition of each title published by Cotta. In 2006 this bibliography received an "Honourable Mention" at the 'ILAB Prize for Bibliography' award ceremony, held by the The International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB) every four years. The Cotta bibliography was also awarded with the 10th ANTIQUARIA Prize for book culture 2004 , Review text: "Dieses dreibändige, von einem vorzüglichen Register erschlossene Kompendium ist eines der besten Findebücher zur Literatur der Goethezeit, ein Standardwerk der deutschen Verlagsgeschichte und überdies ein Schmöker, über dem ins Träumen geraten kann, wer für die Magie von Titeln und von Daten empfänglich ist, die auf die Gestalt und die Schicksale von Büchern hindeuten." (Süddeutsche Zeitung, München, 12.12.2003) "Bernhard Fischers Veröffentlichung stellt alles in den Schatten, was an bibliografischer Recherche bisher möglich war. [...]

Content: " By the time Frederich Schiller came to write the Wallenstein trilogy, his reputation as one of Germany’s leading playwrights was all but secured. Consisting of Wallenstein’s Camp, The Piccolomini and The Death of Wallenstein, this suite of plays appeared between 1798 and 1799, each production under the original direction of Schiller’s collaborator and mentor, Johann Wolfgang (von) Goethe. Across the three plays, which are now commonly performed and printed together, Schiller charts the thwarted rebellion of General Albrecht von Wallenstein. Based loosely on the events of the Thirty Years' War, the trilogy provides a unique vantage on an army’s loyalty to their commander and the machinations and intrigues of international diplomacy, giving insight into the military hero who is placed on the threshold between these forces as they are increasingly pitted against one another. The Wallenstein trilogy, formally innovative and modern beyond its time, is a brilliant study of power, ambition and betrayal. In this new translation—the latest in a long line of distinguished English translations of the play, starting with Coleridge's in Schiller's lifetime—Flora Kimmich succeeds in rendering what is often a difficult source text into language that is at once accessible and enjoyable. Coupled with a complete and careful commentary and a glossary, both of which are targeted to undergraduates, and accompanied by an authoritative introductory essay by Roger Paulin, this edition also includes embedded readings in German of the play and links to the original German text. It will be an invaluable resource for students of German, European literature and history, and military history, as well as to all readers approaching this important set of plays for the first time. Content: "This is the first full-scale biography, in any language, of a towering figure in German and European Romanticism: August Wilhelm Schlegel whose life, 1767 to 1845, coincided with its inexorable rise. As poet, translator, critic and oriental scholar, Schlegel's extraordinarily diverse interests and writings left a vast intellectual legacy, making him a foundational figure in several branches of knowledge. He was one of the last thinkers in Europe able to practise as well as to theorise, and to attempt to comprehend the nature of culture without being forced to be a narrow specialist. With his brother Friedrich, for example, Schlegel edited the avant-garde Romantic periodical Athenaeum; and he produced with his wife Caroline a translation of Shakespeare, the first metrical version into any foreign language. Schlegel's Lectures on Dramatic Art and Literature were a defining force for Coleridge and for the French Romantics. But his interests extended to French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese literature, as well to the Greek and Latin classics, and to Sanskrit. August Wilhelm Schlegel is the first attempt to engage with this totality, to combine an account of Schlegel's life and times with a critical evaluation of his work and its influence. Through the study of one man's rich life, incorporating the most recent scholarship, theoretical approaches, and archival resources, while remaining easily accessible to all readers, Paulin has recovered the intellectual climate of Romanticism in Germany and traced its development into a still-potent international movement. The extraordinarily wide scope and variety of Schlegel's activities have hitherto acted as a barrier to literary scholars, even in Germany. In Roger Paulin, whose career has given him the knowledge and the experience to grapple with such an ambitious project, Schlegel has at last found a worthy exponent."--Publisher's website

Content: "This bold undertaking covers Western theatre from ancient Greece to the present day. It traces the development of dramatic art through the miracle plays, the great Shakespearean period, Molière and Racine in France, Goethe in Germany, through the nineteenth century and the main movements in the twentieth century. It is illustrated by numerous examples of differing styles, with some historical recordings as well and excerpts from nearly fifty plays - a fascinating journey. It is written by David Timson, the British actor and director who features extensively on Naxos AudioBooks in both roles."
Content: Rezension(1): "KLIATT :“It comes as a pleasant surprise to see both how much of the history of the theater is covered and how beautifully it is done in little more than five hours of audiotape. Jacobi’s fine reading is interspersed with theatrical jewels, read by members of the cast. A good listening experience for not just someone already familiar with the plays, but also as an introduction to them. In almost every instance, I was hooked by the brief cast scenes and wanted the play to continue.” " Rezension(2): " School Library Journal : “British actor and director, David Timson, merits our unmitigated kudos for his knowledgeable and highly entertaining outline of the 2,500 year history of Western theatre. Interlaced throughout the narration are more than 50 excerpts from representative dramatic works of each respective period performed by an ensemble of four veteran National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company actors. The deus ex machina is provided in the person of narrator Derek Jacobi, an actor whose incomparable talent and stentorian voice blissfully commands the listeners’ undivided attention. Individual cassette introductions and conclusions as well as breaks between sections are punctuated with fanfare-like period classical music from the vast Naxos catalog. Detailed liner notes are provided. The identification of each dramatic passage performed is also included. Timson contributes an introduction and glossary of technical terms. This excellent work will find an eager and hungry audience in high school humanities, English, and theatre classes.” " Rezension(3): " The (London) Sunday Times : “Stylishly produced, authoritative and entertaining.” " Rezension(4): " Frank Behrens for amazon.com : “Not since I played the Naxos’ A History of Opera have I so much enjoyed a recorded non-fiction treat like David Timson's The History of Theatre , narrated by the venerable Derek Jacobi. What there is here would make an excellent review for a theatre major studying for exams and an even better introduction to one not all that familiar with the story of our theatre as it progressed to what it is today. An especially good feature of this set is the use of professional actors--Carole Boyd, John McAndrew, Teresa Gallagher and Caroline Faber--to give some short excerpts from major works.” " Rezension(5): " CD Now : “It might not seem on the surface that a four-CD set largely consisting of what's basically a lecture covering the development of theater over the course of three millennia could be especially compelling, but in fact this new release from Naxos is consistently fascinating and never drags. The great Derek Jacobi is a superb narrator of the text by David Timson, an experienced English actor himself. The alternation of scholarly explanation and acted examples is quite effective, and the snippets of music used to divide the sections are apt. The five hours it takes to listen to all four CDs will be time well spent for both theater buffs and neophytes.” " Rezension(6): " Arizona Daily Star : “Naxos combines classic literature with its huge archive of classic music. Some beautifully formatted tapes are the result. Naxos also has produced extraordinary survey tapes. David Timson’s The History of Theateris read by David Jacobi and backed with music and actors illustrating 50 excerpts of plays from Euripides to Harold Pinter.” " Rezension(7): " AudioFile Magazine: “With master Derek Jacobi and actors who excerpt from dozens of plays as guides, the listener is treated to a fascinating chronicle for students, aficionados, and even anyone with a passing interest in history or theater. Jacobi illuminates the cultural heritage surrounding each period in a style both grand and approachable. David Timson's text is rich and involving. The linear sequence is tracked on the CD version, and the excellent liner notes to the plays, the excerpts, and the music round out this significant program.” " Rezension(8): "〈a href=http://www.audiofilemagazine.com target=_blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/audiofile_logo.jpg alt=AudioFile Magazine border=0 /〉〈/a〉:Following the success of The History of Opera, Naxos produces the history of drama and the stage from ancient Greece through the twentieth century in an accessible program.
