Der dritte Band der historisch-kritischen Edition von Arthur Schnitzlers Frühwerk bringt mit „Sterben0 seine erste Novelle, die selbständig in Buchform erschien (1895). Mit ihr gelang ihm der Durchbruch als Erzähler. Die Ausgabe bietet Faksimiles der handschriftlichen Vorarbeiten, versehen mit einer Transkription, deren Form eigens für Schnitzlers schwierige Schrift entwickelt wurde. Der edierte Drucktext, der auf dem Erstdruck basiert, wird durch einen kritischen Apparat und einen Einzelstellenkommentar erschlossen. Ein Editionsbericht zeichnet detailreich die Entstehungs- und Überlieferungsgeschichte der Novelle nach.

Sterben (Dying), the third volume of the historical-critical edition of the early works of Arthur Schnitzler, presents the first of his novellas that was published as a separate book (1895). The publication of this work was a breakthrough moment in his career as a writer. This edition offers facsimiles of the hand-written early versions of the work and includes a transcription that was formulated specifically for Schnitzler’s difficult handwriting. The edited print text is based on the first edition, and includes a critical apparatus and line-by-line commentary. An editorial report traces in detail the history of the novella’s creation and transmission.
