Was ist übrig von der Architektur der Zwanziger Jahre? Walter Müller-Wulckows drei Blaue Bücher von 1929 gehören zu den Klassikern der Architekturgeschichtsschreibung und der Moderne in Deutschland. In den Bänden "Bauten der Arbeit und des Verkehrs", "Wohnbauten und Siedlungen" sowie "Bauten der Gemeinschaft" zeigte Müller-Wulckow 323 Fotos von 248 verschiedenen zeitgenössischen Projekten, um einen repräsentativen Überblick des Baugeschehens seiner Zeit zu geben. Dabei ging er weit über die Architektur des "Neuen Bauens" (Bauhaus u.a.) hinaus. Peter Bläsing hat 1994 - 2009 allen diesen Bauwerken mit großer Sorgfalt nachgespürt und sie - oder ihren ehemaligen Standort - fotografiert, möglichst aus dem Blickwinkel von 1929. Eines der Ergebnisse: knapp ein Drittel der Gebäude wurden inzwischen zerstört oder bis zur Unkenntlichkeit verändert. Erstaunlich viele aber wurden mehr oder weniger gepflegt und sind in ihrer Substanz erhalten. Während Müller-Wulckow die Bilder seiner "Blauen Bücher" nach Bau-Aufgaben und optischen, geradezu ikonografischen Gesichtspunkten geordnet hatte, sind die Bilder des vorliegenden Bandes nach dem Ortsalphabet strukturiert. In Bildbeischriften findet der Leser die von Peter Bläsing recherchierten genauen Adressen sowie vielfach Notizen zur Bauhistorie und zum aktuellen Zustand.In seinem einführenden Essay erörtert Christian Welzbacher die Problematik eines angemessenen Umgangs mit dem architektonischen Erbe der Zwanziger Jahre. Er weist unter anderem darauf hin, dass sowohl die Bilder von 1929 als auch die jüngsten bestenfalls Abbilder einer "Moderne" sind, die immer nur zwischen Buchdeckeln oder in den Köpfen existiert hat.
