Content: "Evolutionary theory and philosophy of mind come together in this carefully reasoned explanation of what is now known about humankind's place in nature. According to Professor James H. Fetzer, any scientific account of the evolution of mind must be based on a theoretically defensible conception of what mind is, clarifying the way in which mental states influence behavior. Fetzer disputes the computational conception, currently the most fashionable within cognitive science, and propounds an alternative approach based on semiotics. Using gene-culture co-evolutionary theory, we can identify intelligence with epigenetic rules involving the use of signs. In this view, some machines may be credited with intelligence but not with minds." "Fetzer's wide-ranging discussion sheds light on many controversial issues, including the scientific status of sociobiology, variability in intelligence among human populations, and the relation between biological evolution and moral imperatives."--BOOK JACKET.

Content: "Henry L. Tosi's Theories of Organization offers a unique treatment of a broad range of important theoretical approaches to the study of organizations, including a thorough overview of classical theory, institutional theory, population ecology, critical organization theory, and postmodern approaches. Tosi also provides a helpful summary of the work of Chester Barnard, the contributions of James March and Herbert Simon, and economic approaches to organization." "Rather than focusing on specific topics, such as authority, goals, and organizational structure, this presentation of organizational theory provides comprehensive coverage of the important variables and relationships in each of a broad range of theories, thus providing the reader with a thorough understanding of each theoretical model included." "This book is useful as a supplemental text in advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in Organizational Theory."--BOOK JACKET.

Content: Boilerplate, the fine print of standard contracts, is more prevalent than ever in commercial trade and in electronic commerce. But what is in it, beyond legal technicalities? Why is it so hard to read and why is it often so one-sided? Who writes it, who reads it, and what effect does it have? The studies in this volume question whether boilerplate is true contract. Does it resemble a statute? Is it a species of property? Should we think of it as a feature of the product we buy? Does competition improve boilerplate? Looking at the empirical reality in which various boilerplates operate, leading private law experts reveal subtle and previously unrecognized ways in which boilerplate clauses encourage information flow, but also reduce it; how new boilerplate terms are produced, and how innovation in boilerplate is stifled; how negotiation happens in the shadow of boilerplate, and how it is subdued. They offer a new explanation as to why boilerplate is often so one-sided. With emphasis on empiricism and economic thinking, this volume provides a more nuanced understanding of the 'DNA' of market contracts, the boilerplate terms
