Content: Why did the twentieth century witness unprecedented organized genocide? Can we learn why genocide is perpetrated by comparing different cases of genocide? Is the Holocaust unique, or does it share causes and features with other cases of state-sponsored mass murder? Can genocide be prevented? Blending gripping narrative with trenchant analysis, Eric Weitz investigates four of the twentieth century's major eruptions of genocide: the Soviet Union under Stalin, Nazi Germany, Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge, and the former Yugoslavia. Drawing on historical sources as well as trial records, memoirs, novels, and poems, Weitz explains the prevalence of genocide in the twentieth century--and shows how and why it became so systematic and deadly. Weitz depicts the searing brutality of each genocide and traces its origins back to those most powerful categories of the modern world: race and nation. He demonstrates how, in each of the cases, a strong state pursuing utopia promoted a particular mix of extreme national and racial ideologies. In moments of intense crisis, these states targeted certain national and racial groups, believing that only the annihilation of these "enemies" would enable the dominant group to flourish. And in each instance, large segments of the population were enticed to join in the often ritualistic actions that destroyed their neighbors. This book offers some of the most absorbing accounts ever written of the population purges forever associated with the names Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, and Milosevic. A controversial and richly textured comparison of these four modern cases, it identifies the social and political forces that produce genocide.

Content: The reign of Emperor Yongle, or “Perpetual Happiness,” was one of the most dramatic and significant in Chinese history. It began with civil war and a bloody coup, saw the construction of the Forbidden City, the completion of the Grand Canal, consolidation of the imperial bureaucracy, and expansion of China’s territory into Mongolia, Manchuria, and Vietnam.Beginning with an hour-by-hour account of one day in Yongle’s court, Shih-shan Henry Tsai presents the multiple dimensions of the life of Yongle (Zhu Di, 1360-1424) in fascinating detail. Tsai examines the role of birth, education, and tradition in molding the emperor’s personality and values, and paints a rich portrait of a man characterized by stark contrasts. Synthesizing primary and secondary source materials, he has crafted a colorful biography of the most renowned of the Ming emperors.

Content: Svat Soucek's book offers a short and accessible introduction to the history of Inner Asia. The narrative, which begins with the arrival of Islam, charts the rise and fall of the different dynasties right up to the Russian conquest. Dynastic tables and maps augment and elucidate the text. The contemporary focus rests on the seven countries which make up the core of present-day Eurasia, that is Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Sinkiang and Mongolia. Since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, renewed interest in these countries has prompted considerable political, cultural, economic and religious debate. While a divergent literature has evolved in consequence, no comprehensive survey of the region has been attempted. Soucek's history promises to fill this gap and to become an indispensable source of information for anyone studying or visiting the region.--Publisher description.

Series Statement: Foundations of public international law
Content: "Dramatic events in Kosovo and East Timor have raised fundamental questions about international law on the use of force: was NATO entitled to exercise a right of humanitarian intervention to protect the ethnic Albanians of Kosovo by its bombing campaign? What power did the United Nations have to send a UN force, or to authorize an Australian-led force, to stop the fighting that escalated when the people of East Timor voted for independence?" "This book aims to cover the whole of the large and controversial subject of the use of force in international law; it examines not only the use of force by states but also the role of the UN and regional organizations in the maintenance of international peace and security. The focus is on state practice in the light of doctrinal debates. During the Cold War and the decolonization process states and writers were divided as to the scope of the right of states to use force in self-defence to further self-determination and to intervene in civil wars. It is now time to reappraise these differences and to assess how far the end of the Cold War has brought greater agreement. In recent years there has also been a vast increase in the activity of the UN Security Council. Peacekeeping operations in Yugoslavia, Somalia, and Rwanda, the greater use of enforcement powers by the Security Council (as in the Iraq/Kuwait conflict), greater cooperation with regional organizations (as with ECOWAS in Liberia and Sierra Leone) - all these developments provoke a new debate about the principles that now regulate Security Council operations."--BOOK JACKET.
