Content: "Contrasts are statistical procedures for asking focused questions of data. Compared to diffuse or omnibus questions, focused questions are characterized by greater conceptual clarity and greater statistical power when examining those focused questions. If an effect truly exists, we are more likely to discover it and to believe it to be real when asking focused questions rather than omnibus ones. Researchers, teachers of research methods, and graduate students will be familiar with the principles and procedures of contrast analysis but will also be introduced to a series of newly developed concepts, measures, and indices that permit a wider and more useful application of contrast analysis. This volume takes on this new approach by introducing a family of correlational effect size estimates."--BOOK JACKET.

Content: "Common sense suggests that it is always preferable to have more options than fewer, and better to have more knowledge than less. This provocative book argues that, very often, common sense fails. Sometimes it is simply the case that less is more; people may benefit from being constrained in their options or from being ignorant." "The three long essays that constitute this book revise and expand the ideas developed in Jon Elster's classic study Ulysses and the Sirens. It is not simply a new edition of the earlier book, though; many of the issues merely touched on before are explored here in much more detail." "The book will interest professionals and students in philosophy, political science, psychology, and economics."--BOOK JACKET.

Content: "Barbara Rogoff argues that human development must be understood as a cultural process. Individuals develop as participants in their cultural communities, engaging with others in shared endeavors and building on cultural practices of prior generations ... [This book] identifies patterns in the differences and similarities among cultural communities, such as children's opportunities to engage in mature activities of their community or in specialized child-focused activities. The book examines classic aspects of development afresh from a cultural angle--childrearing, social relations, interdependence and autonomy, developmental transitions across the lifespan, gender roles, attachment, and learning and cognitive development"--Dust jacket.

Content: Problems are a central part of human life. The Psychology of Problem Solving organizes in one volume much of what psychologists know about problem solving and the factors that contribute to its success or failure. There are chapters by leading experts in this field, including Miriam Bassok, Randall Engle, Anders Ericsson, Arthur Graesser, Keith Stanovich, Norbert Schwarz, and Barry Zimmerman, among others. The Psychology of Problem Solving is divided into four parts. Following an introduction that reviews the nature of problems and the history and methods of the field, Part II focuses on individual differences in, and the influence of, the abilities and skills that humans bring to problem situations. Part III examines motivational and emotional states and cognitive strategies that influence problem solving performance, while Part IV summarizes and integrates the various views of problem solving proposed in the preceding chapters.

Content: In the aftermath of the Port Arthur shootings, Dunblane or the schoolyard killings in America, communities try to come to terms with private and public trauma and there is a need to understand what kind of person can commit such terrible acts. The problem of how to understand dangerousness often centres on the role of the mental health and criminal justice systems and it is from the intersection of these two institutions that the categorisation of dangerous persons has emerged. This 2001 book traces the history of the category of antisocial personality disorder and shows how it is linked to particular kinds of governing. It examines key legal and institutional developments in Australia, the UK and the US and also parallel developments within psychiatry and psychological medicine. Applying a social theoretical analysis to this material, McCallum challenges our assumptions about the formation and control concepts of dangerousness and personality.

Series Statement: Cambridge studies in contentious politics
Content: "Over the past two decades the study of social movements, revolution, democratization and other non-routine politics has flourished. And yet research on the topic remains highly fragmented, reflecting the influence of at least three traditional divisions. The first of these reflects the view that various forms of contention are distinct and should be studied independent of others. Separate literatures have developed around the study of social movements, revolutions and industrial conflict. A second approach to the study of political contention denies the possibility of general theory in deference to a grounding in the temporal and spatial particulars of any given episode of contention. The study of contentious politics are left to 'area specialists' and/or historians with a thorough knowledge of the time and place in question. Finally, overlaid on these two divisions are stylized theoretical traditions - structuralist, culturalist, and rationalist - that have developed largely in isolation from one another." http://www.loc.gov/catdir/description/cam021/2001016172.html.

Content: "In preparing this third, "war" edition of the Measurement of Adult Intelligence my primary aim has been to increase the book's usefulness to those engaged in the field of applied psychometrics. I have borne in mind particularly the military applications of the Wechsler-Bellevue Scale, as it is now being used by some of the armed services of our own country as well as of Great Britain. Accordingly, most of the changes made will be found in the chapters dealing with Clinical applications and the Problem of mental deterioration. These chapters have been somewhat extended and in part rewritten. The table of 'signs' for different clinical entities has been completely revised and a new quantitative method for determining mental deterioration elaborated. Both of these presentations should be of value not only in the field of neuropsychiatric diagnosis but also in questions connected with rehabilitation. In addition to the above, some changes have been made in the scoring of certain subtests of the Scale. The effect of these changes will be to increase the I.Q. range at the upper end of the Scale, without however altering significantly the norms for the population as a whole. In the case of one or two tests (noticeably, the Arithmetic) the change has necessitated slight alteration in the scoring of some of the subtest items. Little alteration has otherwise been made in the substance of the text. One table and two figures which were not particularly useful have been omitted and two new tables which should be of immediate and practical value added. Also added is a bibliography of most of the important studies with the Wechsler-Bellevue Scale, published up to March 1944"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved).
