Abstract:
Fifty two cultures of Bacillus thuringiensis belonging to 10 varieties were screened with respect to the potency of their endotoxin preparations against larvae of greasy cutworm Agrotis ypsilon and cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis . The endotoxins of the cultures were bioassayed under standard conditions on larvae fed on castor oil leaves as a natural diet priorly dipped in endotoxin suspensions of 500 μg/ml concentrations along with appropriate controls that were run simultaneously. The LC 50 values were then determined for those active strains that gave 80 % or more kill at the above mentioned endotoxin concentration. The most effective strains against A. ypsilon were HD‐130 (var. aizawai ), HD‐703 (var. thuringiensis ), HD‐134 (var. aizawai ) and HD‐341 (var. kurstaki ) giving LC 50 values of 15 , 23, 26 and 47 μg/ml, respectively as compared to 3640 μg/ml of the HD‐1–1980 standard endotoxin. With respect to the potency against S. littoralis , the most active cultures were HD‐593 (var. aizawai ), HD‐110 (var. entomocidus ), HD‐263 (var. kurstaki ) and HD‐554 (var. canadensis ) recording LC 50 values of 22 , 27, 36 and 38 μg endotoxin/ml, respectively as compared to 2160 μg/ml for HD‐1–1980 standard preparation. Among the 52 bacterial strains tested, only 8 cultures exhibited dual activity against both of the target insects namely, HD‐134, HD‐228, HD‐282, HD‐593 (var. aizawai ), HD‐234 (var. galleriae ), HD‐263, HD‐341 (var. kurstaki ) and HD‐96 (var. thuringiensis ). The results are discussed in the light of their possible application in the biological control of major pests of oil crops in Egypt.
