    Series Statement: Reimagining Ireland 119
Content: «An important contribution to understanding our culinary journey in Ireland from a time when food was regarded merely as sustenance. As a nation, we have grown in confidence. Up to relatively recently in Ireland, we had a serious inferiority complex and not just about our food and food culture. Brian documents through various prisms the growing pride in our tradition, the quality of our produce and the growing skills of our chefs. At last, we appreciate what we have here in Ireland and serve our Irish food proudly.»(Darina Allen, Ballymaloe Cookery School)Through concepts such as place and story, this work considers the cultural importance of the foods we eat and the drinks we imbibe in Irish society. While providing us with the necessary sustenance to survive, they also have something to say in terms of how we relate to each other and the world around us. The book examines the products we associate with gastronomy in Ireland and the uniquely Irish places in which they are consumed. Places considered include the Irish pub, the traditional Irish butcher shop and the Irish whiskey distillery. Both products and places are explored through the lens of terroir, experience and the impact of Third Place and Fourth Space paradigms. Though much of what is discussed here is anchored in the past, the book also examines how that past has impacted on more contemporary phenomena such as Irish café culture and social gastronomy. While the work is primarily focused on Ireland, it draws insights from lessons learned in countries like France that possess a widely renowned gastronomic legacy. In addition to the obvious food connections, the chapters in this work are all linked by a common thread of personal engagement that stems from a lifetime spent working in and around the food and drink sector.

Content: First realized commercially in the late eighteenth century, stereotyping—the creation of solid printing plates cast from moveable type—fundamentally changed the way in which books were printed. Publishing Plates chronicles the technological and cultural shifts that resulted from the introduction of this technology in the United States. The commissioning of plates altered shop practices, distribution methods, and even the author-publisher relationship. Drawing on archival records, Jeffrey M. Makala traces the first uses of stereotyping in Philadelphia in 1812, its adoption by printers in New York and Philadelphia, and its effects on the trade. He looks closely at the printers, typefounders, authors, and publishers who watched small, regional, artisan-based printing traditions rapidly evolve, clearing the way for the industrialized publishing industry that would emerge in the United States at midcentury. Through case studies of the publisher Mathew Carey and the American Bible Society, one of the first publishers of cheap Bibles, Makala explores the origins of the American publishing industry and American mass media. In addition, Makala examines changes in the notion of authorship, copyright, and language and their effects on writers and literary circles, giving examples from the works and lives of Herman Melville, Sojourner Truth, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry David Thoreau, and Walt Whitman, among others. Incorporating perspectives from the fields of book history, the history of technology, material culture studies, and American studies, this book presents a rich, detailed history of an innovation that transformed American culture

Content: Enter the Kafkaesque world of America's famous but notorious Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), where returning soldiers seek a new start to the rest of their lives. Can they overcome the traumas of war, and military service, if they are also at war with the VA? The answer is both No - government bureaucracy can be as formidable a foe as that on any battlefield or in the barracks - and Yes, given veterans' willingness to face the demons of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), drug addiction and other military-related traumas with the help of fiercely committed social workers, psychologists and healthcare experts. Andrea Plate, author and Licensed Clinical Social Worker, spent 15 years working with America's wounded warriors. From battlefield to bedside to group talk-therapy, she exposes the human face of war, up close and personal, and some of the most remarkably resilient souls who survived it.

Jessica Davis isn't interested in dating. She's a busy single mom who's raising her beloved daughter, Juno, with her grandparents (who also raised Jess since her addict mother wasn't exactly a reliable presence). Between her job in statistics, helping Juno with school projects, and bailing her mom out whenever she gets into trouble, Jess' plate is full enough. But one day, when she and her romance-novelist BFF, Fizzy, are working at a coffee shop, they start up a conversation with a grumpy regular they refer to as Americano (based on his drink order). It turns out he's Dr. River Pea, the founder of a new matchmaking company, GeneticAlly, that matches users based on their DNA. When Jess capitulates to Fizzy by giving the company a spit sample, she finds out she has 98% compatibility with River, a man she already can't stand, and she's not interested in exploring anything. But between losing a big client and giving her mom another loan, Jess needs money, and GeneticAlly offers to pay her to date him. As Jess begins to get to know the real River, she starts to wonder if the data might be right. Lauren, the author duo behind The Honey-Don't List (2020) and countless other rom-coms, not only introduce a fascinating and unique premise, but flawlessly execute it with their trademark humor and charm. Jess is a believable and sympathetic heroine--it's easy to see why she's skeptical of GeneticAlly's promises but still willing to give it a try. And although River starts out a bit unlikable, his irritable facade conceals hidden depths and passions. As their relationship proceeds, each encounter ratchets up the sexual tension and the emotional stakes, creating a love story that keeps the pages flying. Although the romance is stellar, some of the most enjoyable scenes in the book take place between the other people in Jess' life: her precocious daughter, her hilarious and irreverent best friend, and her sweet, dependable grandparents. Readers won't want to leave these characters or this world. A sexy, science-filled, and surprising romance full of warmth and wit. COPYRIGHT(2021) Kirkus Reviews, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. " Rezension(3): "〈a href=https://www.booklistonline.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/booklist_logo.png alt=Booklist border=0 /〉〈/a〉: March 15, 2021 Jess Davis, a freelance statistician and single mother, is ready to swear off dating after her most recent lackluster outing. And nothing about River Pea, a grumpy if hot regular at her favorite coffee shop, tempts her to change her mind, especially after he insults her and makes an already terrible day worse. Yet somehow learning that he is a scientist who has designed a gene-based matchmaking product piques Jess' interest. On a whim, she provides a sample to the dating service and then is more than skeptical to learn that it identifies River as a nearly perfect match just when his company's IPO is mere months away. Jess' analytical and practical sides war with her desire to protect herself and her daughter, while River's dedication to his company means that his own romantic life has not been a priority, yet they decide to trust the science (and their attraction) and give a relationship a chance. It is a treat to watch Jess and River figure out how to balance what the numbers predicted with their growing feelings. Their journey is made even more enjoyable by the presence of their scene-stealing relatives and friends. This latest romance by the duo Christina Lauren, following The Honey-Don't List (2020), is another winner. COPYRIGHT(2021) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. But a new dating service, GeneticAlly, gives her pause. Can her DNA really predict her soulmate? When she is a 98% match for the company's founder, River Pena, she can't believe it,although handsome, River is much too stuck-up for her. Desperate for money, however, Jess agrees to be the face of the company's success and play up her love match with River for the tabloids. She doesn't expect to fall for the man behind the statistics, who secretly wants to find love just as much as Jess. VERDICT With the laugh-out-loud voice that Lauren's die-hard fans adore, this sweet, charming, and humorous book is a perfect match for readers looking for a low-stakes, high swoon-factor romance, but some readers may have concerns about the ethical implications of DNA-based matchmaking. --Jacqueline Rammer, Lakeview Community Lib., Random Lake, WICopyright 2021 Library Journal, LLC Used with permission.
