Series Statement: Modern masters of science fiction
Content: "Greg Egan (1961- ) publishes works that challenge readers with rigorous, deeply-informed scientific speculation. He unapologetically delves into mathematics, physics, and other disciplines in his prose, putting him in the vanguard of the hard science fiction renaissance of the 1990s. A working physicist and engineer, Karen Burnham is uniquely positioned to provide an in-depth study of Egan's science-heavy oeuvre. Her survey of the author's career covers novels like Permutation City and Schild's Ladder and the Hugo Award-winning novella "Oceanic," analyzing how Egan used cutting-edge scientific theory to explore ethical questions and the nature of humanity. As Burnham shows, Egan's collected works constitute a bold artistic statement: that narratives of science are equal to those of poetry and drama, and that science holds a place in the human condition as exalted as religion or art. The volume includes a rare interview with the famously press-shy Egan covering his works, themes, intellectual interests, and thought processes"..

Content: "The Vietnam War has left a deep and lasting impression in American life, from its impact on the men and women who fought in it, to the journalists and photographers who covered it, to the millions of Americans who protested against it or supported it. Thanks to an uncensored press, the world knew and saw more of this war than any in history before or since. The Associated Press made an unprecedented commitment to reporting the conflict: It gathered an extraordinary group of superb photojournalists in its Saigon bureau, and these men created one of the great photographic legacies of the twentieth century. Collected here are images that tell the human story of the Vietnam War, as we watch the American presence in the war swell from a trickle of military advisers in the late 1950s, through dramatic operations involving thousands of soldiers in the 1960s, to the fall of Saigon in 1975. These are pictures that both recorded and made history, taken by unbelievably courageous photojournalists. In a moving essay, writer Pete Hamill, who reported from Vietnam in 1965, celebrates their achievement, focusing on five masters who took many of the photographs in the book: Horst Faas, Henri Huet, Eddie Adams, Nick Ut, and Phuoc Van Dang. As we begin to look back from the vantage point of half a century, this is the book that will serve as a photographic record of the drama and tragedy of the Vietnam War"--

Uniform Title: Gaumont Treasures: Jacques Feyder and the Early Masters of French Cinema
Content: Jacques Feyder enjoyed a long, fruitful career as director, celebrated for such films as "The Kiss" (1929, starring Greta Garbo) and "Knight Without Armor" (1937, with Marlene Dietrich). Feyder cultivated his talents in the 1910s at the Gaumont Studios, where a carefully-curated stable of innovative directors were advancing the artistic finesse of the adolescent art form. In addition to Feyder’s sophisticated comedies, this volume showcases a wide variety of other forms, impeccably executed: slapstick (The Long Arm of the Law), realism (The Barges), and experimental film (Feet and Hands). This disc also presents samples of the astounding technical achievements that Gaumont had mastered, years before they became standard practice, such as the Phonoscéne, a synchronized sound process presented to the public via the Chronomégaphone sound-on-disc system. Uniform Title: Gaumont Treasures: Emile Cohl
Content: On August 17, 1908, history was made at the Théâtre du Gymnase in Paris, when the first pen-and-ink animated film by Emile Cohl had its premiere: "Fantasmagoria". It was not the invention of animation. Others, including Emile Reynaud and Stuart Blackton, had experimented with certain techniques, but it was Cohl who dedicated himself to it and expanded the possibilities of the fledgling art form. He explored the effects of various forms of two-dimensional animation, pixillation, puppetry, and double-exposure, occasionally blending live action with animation, paving the way for other innovators – such as Winsor McCay and Walt Disney - who followed in his wake. But Cohl was more than a great technician. His films are infused with his unique personality. His tableaux vivants films, including "Crowns" and "The Living Fan", reveal an affinity for Symbolist art. He was also a member of the 19th-century art rebels known as the Incoherents. As such, Cohl delighted in skewering all varieties of pomp and pretension, with a wit and irreverence that was a significant influence upon the Surrealist movement of the 1920s. [Cover]
