Series Statement: Contemporary studies in economic and financial analysis v. 85
Content: The transformation of Ireland from one of the poorer countries in Western Europe to one of the best performing is one of the most remarkable economic success stories in recent times. The ten papers in this collection were presented at a conference at Lehigh University in March 2001. Written from a broad interdisciplinary perspective, the papers collectively discuss the recent evolution of the Irish economy and the factors responsible. They also analyze the problems that rapid growth has generated and the consequent domestic policy challenges in such areas as infrastructure, the environment, education, and social welfare

Content: Since 1977, archaeologist Tom Dillehay has been unearthing conclusive evidence of human habitation in the Americas at least 15,000 to 20,000 years ago, settling a bitter debate and demolishing the standard scientific account of the settlement of the Americas. The question of how people first came to the Americas is now thrown wide open: the best guess is that they arrived from a variety of places, at many different times and by many different routes. Dillehay describes who the earliest settlers are likely to have been, where they may have landed, how they dispersed across two continents, what their technology and folkways may have been like, and how they interacted with the famous Clovis culture once thought to represent the earliest settlers.

    Series Statement: Key contemporary thinkers
Content: "This is the first full-scale study of the work of Clifford Geertz, who is one of the best-known anthropologists in the world today. Fred Inglis situates Geertz's thought in the context of his life and times, reviewing its forty-year range." "Geertz's progress is charted in detail by his field work in Java, Bali and Morocco, as well as his work in the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. His two collections of essays, the Interpretation of Cultures and Local Knowledge, are summarized and criticized. The celebrated and controversial essay on the Balinese cockfight is defended against its critics, and in an extended conclusion, his account of the Balinese Theatre-State is, as Geertz suggests, proposed as a more adequate method for the combined study of culture and politics than the professionals' routine application of heavy-handed concepts such as 'power' and 'status'."--BOOK JACKET.

Note: This book evolved from notes originally developed for a graduate course, "Best Approximation in Normed Linear Spaces," that I began giving at Penn State Uni versity more than 25 years ago. It soon became evident. that many of the students who wanted to take the course (including engineers, computer scientists, and statis ticians, as well as mathematicians) did not have the necessary prerequisites such as a working knowledge of Lp-spaces and some basic functional analysis. (Today such material is typically contained in the first-year graduate course in analysis. ) To accommodate these students, I usually ended up spending nearly half the course on these prerequisites, and the last half was devoted to the "best approximation" part. I did this a few times and determined that it was not satisfactory: Too much time was being spent on the presumed prerequisites. To be able to devote most of the course to "best approximation," I decided to concentrate on the simplest of the normed linear spaces-the inner product spaces-since the theory in inner product spaces can be taught from first principles in much less time, and also since one can give a convincing argument that inner product spaces are the most important of all the normed linear spaces anyway. The success of this approach turned out to be even better than I had originally anticipated: One can develop a fairly complete theory of best approximation in inner product spaces from first principles, and such was my purpose in writing this book

Content: The Fed has entered a new era, and hardly anyone understands the rules of its game. Where once it could control the economy by controlling what the banks did, it now must push directly on the markets. But how? Why do interest-rate changes sometimes move the markets as expected, and sometimes fail to have any effect? What else is the Fed doing that might affect asset prices and growth rates? The links between Fed decisions and market reactions have become far more complicated and confused than ever before. What is an investor to make of it? In The Fed, one of the world's best financial journalists offers a major new explanation of how the Fed works and how its world has changed. Martin Mayer is the bestselling author of The Bankers and The Bankers: The Next Generation, among many other books. He knows more about the banking system, the markets, and the Federal Reserve than anyone else writing today
Content: The Fed is the first book to explain why all the old rules for Fed watchers are no longer operative, and what it is that investors must know to understand the Fed today. For anyone who wants to know why Alan Greenspan is hailed as the second most powerful man in the United States, The Fed is essential reading. Mayer offers many behind-the-scenes stories from past and present Fed administrations, and he explains the overlooked significance of recent dramatic expansions in the Fed's powers and perks
Content: Why does the Fed care about the difference between 30-year and 29-year bond yields? Why and how did the Fed join with its district banks in organizing the bailout of Long Term Capital Management? How was the age-old war between the Fed and the Comptroller of the Currency finally resolved in 1999? Why has the increased "sunshine" of announcing market interventions and posting proceedings of the Federal Open Market Committee not led to greater market stability? Why did Greenspan make the key decision of the Clinton boom years -- to let the good times roll while unemployment sank to record lows -- despite all historical evidence that it would be inflationary? These are just some of the questions answered in this wide-ranging, sharp, and entertaining book

Content: "Gertrude Bell and Freya Stark are the best known characters in this history and biography of Western women who lived, worked and travelled in Arabia during the first half of the twentieth century. Sometimes flamboyant and unconventional, sometimes conservative and conformist, all of them wanted to be a part of imperial life. Some, like the wives of British officials, were prepared to 'play the game', others, like the American women who went to the Gulf as missionaries, were regarded as difficult newcomers and dangerous threats of imperial authority." "Using previously unexamined sources and personal papers, Penelope Tuson shows these women in a new light, not only as travellers and servants of Empire, but also as thorns-in-the-side of the British government. She also tells the stories of many lesser-known women, whose lives were equally interesting and remarkable but have until now been buried in the archives of Imperial power. Among them are Emily Overend Lorimer, wife of the British representative in Bahrain, a brilliant and witty commentator on the political and social scene, and editor of the Basra Times during the First World War; her contemporaries in the Gulf, the female American protestant missionaries who ran the hospitals in Iraq during the War and also set up schools and medical centres throughout the Gulf; and female adventurers in the inter-war years, such as Rosita Forbes, journalist, friend of heads of state, but uncompromising busy-body in the minds of British officials." "Playing the Game looks at how these very different women negotiated a place for themselves in an imperial culture which rigidly defined female roles and abilities. It explores the different ways in which some women actively participated, some passively colluded, and others deliberately subverted these roles, both in their daily lives and in their own accounts of themselves."--BOOK JACKET.

Content: This book discusses ways to improve macroeconomic policy in the context of the various macroeconomic problems of the past two decades, with the chapters having been written at various times over that period. It emphasises the need to find the best combinations of monetary policy and different forms of taxation and government outlays to achieve high employment and low inflation. There is a concluding chapter discussing the special problems that arise when inflation has become low, zero or even negative.
