Series Statement: Helden - Heroisierungen - Heroismen 13
Mit Beiträgen von Achim Aurnhammer, Chen Zhuangying, Cong Tingting, Fan Jieping, Olmo Gölz, Joachim Grage, He Zhiyuan, Huang Liaoyu, Hu Chunchun, Hu Kai, Sara Kathrin Landa, Stefanie Lethbridge, Lin Chunjie, Dieter Martin, Isabell Oberle, Dominik Pietzcker, Nicola Spakowski, Jennifer Stapornwongkul, Wang Zhiqiang, Wei Yuquing, Xie Juan, Zhang Fan, Zhu Jianhua, Ulrike Zimmermann
Content: This volume elucidates the changing relationship between heroization and othering in a German-Chinese cultural comparison. Intercultural case studies illustrate which representatives of German culture and history were subjected to a process of heroization or were disparaged as negative anti-heroes in Chinese culture. Vice versa, Chinese figures who adopted a corresponding heroic or antiheroic function within the German-speaking world are also examined. This German-Chinese dialogue, in which cultural scientists from Germany and China participate, is guided by the assumption that processes of heroization and de-heroization represent paradigmatic focal points in the economics of intercultural transfer. The relationship between individual and collective heroism and the meaning of alienness - be it of Chinese or German characteristics - when importing heroes offer new perspectives insofar as these importations prove to be complex and inconsistent. With contributions by Achim Aurnhammer, Chen Zhuangying, Cong Tingting, Fan Jieping, Olmo Gölz, Joachim Grage, He Zhiyuan, Huang Liaoyu, Hu Chunchun, Hu Kai, Sara Kathrin Landa, Stefanie Lethbridge, Lin Chunjie, Dieter Martin, Isabell Oberle, Dominik Pietzcker, Nicola Spakowski, Jennifer Stapornwongkul, Wang Zhiqiang, Wei Yuquing, Xie Juan, Zhang Fan, Zhu Jianhua, Ulrike Zimmermann

Content: When New German cinema directors like R. W. Fassbinder, Ulrike Ottinger, and Werner Schroeter explored issues of identity--national, political, personal, and sexual--music and film style played crucial roles. Most studies of the celebrated film movement, however, have sidestepped the role of music, a curious oversight given its importance to German culture and nation formation. Caryl Flinn's study reverses this trend, identifying styles of historical remembrance in which music participates. Flinn concentrates on those styles that urge listeners to interact with difference--including that embodied in Germany's difficult history--rather than to "master" or "get past" it. Flinn breaks new ground by considering contemporary reception frameworks of the New German Cinema, a generation after its end. She discusses transnational, cultural, and historical contexts as well as the sexual, ethnic, national, and historical diversity of audiences. Through detailed case studies, she shows how music helps filmgoers engage with a range of historical subjects and experiences. Each chapter of The New German Cinema examines a particular stylistic strategy, assessing music's role in each. The study also examines queer strategies like kitsch and camp and explores the movement's charged construction of human bodies on which issues of ruination, survival, memory, and pleasure are played out.
Note: Includes bibliographical references and index , Introduction: "strategies of remembrance" -- Mourning, melancholia, and "new German melodrama" -- Modernism's aftershocks: Peer Raben's film music for Fassbinder -- Kluge's assault on history: trauma, testimony, and difference in the patriot -- Undoing act 5: history, bodies, and operatic remains: Kluge's the power of emotion -- Restaging history with fantasy: body, camp, and sound in the films of Treut, Ottinger, and Von Praunheim -- Introjecting kitsch: Werner Schroeter, music, and alterity

Content: Charles Taylor examines the development in 'Western Christendom' of those aspects of modernity which we call secular. What he describes is not a single, continous transformation but a series of new departures, in which earlier forms of religious life have been dissolved or destabilized and new ones created.

Content: "This comprehensive overview of the modern Chinese economy by a noted expert on China's economic development offers a quality and breadth of coverage not found in any other English-language text. In The Chinese Economy, Barry Naughton provides both an engaging, broadly focused introduction to China's economy since 1949 and original insights based on his own extensive research. The book will be an essential resource for students, teachers, scholars, business people, and policymakers. It is suitable for classroom use for undergraduate or graduate courses." "After presenting background material on the pre-1949 economy and the industrialization, reform, and market transition that have taken place since, the book examines different aspects of the modern Chinese economy. It analyzes patterns of growth and development, including population growth and the one-child family policy, the rural economy, including agriculture and rural industrialization; industrial and technological development in urban areas; international trade and foreign investment; macroeconomic trends and cycles and the financial system; and the largely unaddressed problems of environmental quality and the sustainability of growth." "The text is notable also for placing China's economy in interesting comparative contexts, discussing it in relation to other transitional or developing economies and to such advanced industrial countries as the United States and Japan. It provides a broad historical and macro perspective as well as a focused examination of the actual workings of China's complex and dynamic economic development. Interest in the Chinese economy will continue to grow as China becomes an increasingly important player on the world's stage. This book will be the standard reference for understanding and teaching about the next economic superpower. Book jacket."--BOOK JACKET.

Content: "In the aftermath of the reunification of Germany one former dissident recalled nostalgically that under the East German regime 'we had more sex and we had more to laugh about'. Love in the Time of Communism is a fascinating history of the GDR's forgotten sexual revolution and its limits. Josie McLellan shows that under communism divorce rates soared, abortion become commonplace and the rate of births outside marriage was amongst the highest in Europe. Nudism went from ban to state-sponsored boom, and erotica became common currency in both the official economy and the black market. Public discussion of sexuality was, however, tightly controlled and there were few opportunities to challenge traditional gender roles or sexual norms. Josie McLellan's pioneering account questions some of our basic assumptions about the relationship between sexuality, politics and society and is a major contribution to our understanding of the everyday emotional lives of postwar Europeans"--

Content: During World War II, hundreds of thousands of prisoners were worked to death by the Nazis under a brutal system of slave labor in the concentration camps. By 1942, this vast network of slavery extended across all of German-occupied Europe, but the whole operation was run by a surprisingly small staff of bureaucrats--no more than 200 engineers and managers who worked in the Business Administration Main Office of the SS. Their projects included designing and constructing the concentration camps and gas chambers, building secret underground weapons factories, and brokering slave laborers to private companies such as Volkswagen and IG Farben. The business of genocide contradicts the assumption that the SS forced slavery upon the German economy, demonstrating that instead industrialists actively sought out the Business Administration Main Office as a valued partner in the war economy. Moreover, while the bureaucrats who oversaw Holocaust operations have often been seen as technocrats or simple cogs in the machinery, the book reveals their ideological dedication, even fanatical devotion, to slavery and genocide in the name of National Socialism.

Content: Albert O. Hirschman is renowned world-wide for theories that have been at the forefront of political economics during the last half century. In these twenty essays he casts his sharp analytical eye on his own ideas, questioning and qualifying some of his major propositions on social change and economic development. Hirschman's self-subversion, as well as the self-affirmation that is also present here, reveal the workings of a distinguished mind. They also bring us fresh perspective on the material in his twelve previous books and countless essays
Content: In the substantial essays that open this collection, Hirschman reappraises points he made in such books as Exit, Voice, and Loyalty, The Strategy of Economic Development, and the Rhetoric of Reaction. Subsequent essays fruitfully reexplore the themes of Latin American development and market society that have occupied him throughout his career. Hirschman also forays into new puzzles, such as the likely impact, negative or otherwise, of the Eastern European revolutions of 1989 on the Third World, the on-and-off connections between political and economic progress, and the role of conflict in enhancing community spirit in a liberal democracy

Content: This book attends to three outlaw heroes from England, Germany, and North America. Robin Hood, Klaus Stoertebeker, and Jesse James still fascinate people today. The myth of the outlaw expresses social discourses about law and justice, government and resistance, and sovereignty and legitimacy. Stories in which robbers, pirates, or bandits advance to become rebels and heroes give literary form to the contradictions of the legal order. Law has a social and spatial aspect. The depiction of historio-spatial constellations in the narratives reveals how law is imagined as a social relation. This study of mythic spaces of lawlessness opens up a new perspective on the meaning of heroic outlawry as a phenomenon of social and spatial transgression
