Content: "In her lost treatise on music which she titled El caracol, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz addressed the image of the spiral as a metaphor for musical harmony, an image which she distilled in one of her romances. Singing in the choir of the Templo de San Jerónimo, Sor Juana and the other nuns of her convent were raising the tone of their musica humana to be in accord with the music of the heavenly choirs, which the nuns were imitating in their singing. Octavio Paz theorizes a "triple interés" in music in Sor Juana's works: "práctico, teórico, filósofico". Numerous poems allude to the theoretical and philosophical problems of music, resulting in many levels of metaphor and metonym concerning music, especially in the loas and villancicos. Not only does Sor Juana's work address the metaphysical aspects of music, the musica speculative so popular in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but it broaches important questions on the practical applications of new theories of musical harmony: the musica practica. A talented poet, playwright, scientist, and mathematician, Sor Juana also explored musical instruments and theory. Sor Juana/Música investigates the musical aspects of Sor Juana's literary achievements, exploring the dense metaphorical interplay of musical and literary images, and places her works within the musicological ambience of her time. With its interdisciplinary approach, Sor Juana/Música contributes not only to the understanding of Sor Juana's literary works, but also to the degree that literature underpins the other arts as it illuminates the musicological times in which she lived."--Publisher's information.

    Series Statement: Oxford handbooks
Content: The Oxford Handbook of Sound and Image in Western Art is the first book to examine, under one umbrella, different kinds of analogies, mutual influences, integrations and collaborations of audio and visual in different art forms: painting, sculpture, installation, architecture, performance art, animation, film, video art, visual music, multimedia, experimental music, sound art, opera, theatre and dance. Sitting at the cutting edge of the field of music and visual arts, the book offers a unique, at times controversial view of this rapidly evolving area of study. The book is organized around three core thematic sections. The first, Sights & Sounds, concentrates on interaction between the experience of seeing and the experience of hearing. Sound, Space & Matter expands the idea of music to include environmental sounds, vibrating frequencies, homemade instruments, linguistic utterances, noise and silence. Architecture, likewise, faces a similar discourse that examines non-material spaces, environments, human habitats, performances, destruction and void. Enhanced by advanced digital technologies, this aesthetic shift opened the door for endless experiments, which give a new context to theoretical issues such as medium, matter and process in creating and perceiving art. In the third section, Performance, Performativity & Text, music as a performing art provides the point of departure. The new light shed by modernism and the avant-garde on the performative aspect of music have led it - together with sound and text - to become active in new ways in contemporary dance, theatre and the visual arts.
Content: The chapters in the handbook make and prove their arguments using case studies in contemporary art, music, and sound as illustrations, building upon exsiting thought as a foundation for discussion. Artists, curators, students and scholars will find here a panoramic view of cutting-edge discourse in the field, by an international roster of scholars and practitioners. - Yael Kaduri is a musicologist who teaches in the History and Theory Department of Bezalel University and in the Cinema and TV Arts Department of Sapir College.

Content: Klezmer: Music, History, and Memory is the first comprehensive study of the musical structure and social history of klezmer music, the music of the Jewish musicians' guild of Eastern Europe. Emerging in 16th century Prague, the klezmer became a central cultural feature of the largest transnational Jewish community of modern times - the Ashkenazim of Eastern Europe. Much of the musical and choreographic history of the Ashkenazim is embedded in the klezmer repertoire, which functioned as a kind of non-verbal communal memory. The complex of speech, dance, and musical gesture is deeply rooted in Jewish expressive culture, and reached its highest development in Eastern Europe. Klezmer: Music, History, and Memory reveals the artistic transformations of the liturgy of the Ashkenazic synagogue in klezmer wedding melodies, and presents the most extended study available in any language of the relationship of Jewish dance to the rich and varied klezmer music of Eastern Europe. Author Walter Zev Feldman expertly examines the major sources principally in Russian, Yiddish, Hebrew, and Romanian from the 16th to the 20th centuries, including interviews with authoritative European-born klezmorim conducted over a period of more than thirty years in America, Eastern Europe, and Israel. In its musical analysis, this book draws upon the foundational collections of the late Tsarist and early Soviet periods, plus rare cantorial and klezmer manuscripts from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries. - Walter Zev Feldman is a leading researcher in both Ottoman Turkish and Jewish music. During the 1970s he spearheaded the revival of klezmer music. His book, Music of the Ottoman Court (Berlin, 1996) is taught as a basic text world wide. He is also an authority on East European Jewish dance, forming part of his current research on the role of gesture in the performing arts.

Content: Through music, The Hundred Thousand Fools of God opens a window onto the cultural and political history of Central Asia in tsarist, Soviet, and post-Soviet times. Narrated as a travelogue, the book presents the author's encounters with musicians in Tashkent, Bukhara, Khorezm, the mountains and valleys of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan - and Queens, New York, where many Bukharan Jewish musicians have emigrated
Content: Theodore Levin assembles a living musical and ethnographic map by highlighting the fate of traditions, beliefs, and social relationships in Muslim and Jewish Central Asian cultures during and after seventy years of Soviet rule. He evokes the spectacular physical and human geography of the area and weaves a rich ethnography of the life styles, values, and art of the musical performers. The book introduces urban musical genres such as maqam, mavrigi, suvara, and dastan, while in rural areas the focus is on the epic-reciter and the healer, both called baxshi, and on performers of a variety of folk genres. The accompanying 74-minute CD features 23 on-site recordings of musicians from the cities, mountains, and valleys of Transoxania in performances ranging from urban rock, court music, and classical pieces combining European and Central Asian influences to spirited wedding songs, lyrical ghazals, ritual chants, and field hollers

Content: To what extent can music be employed to shape one culture's understanding of another? In the American imagination, Japan has represented the "most alien" nation for over 150 years. This perceived difference has inspired fantasies-of both desire and repulsion-through which Japanese culture has profoundly impacted the arts and industry of the U.S. While the influence of Japan on American and European painting, architecture, design, theater, and literature has been celebrated in numerous books and exhibitions, the role of music has been virtually ignored until now. 0W. Anthony Sheppard's Extreme Exoticism offers a detailed documentation and wide-ranging investigation of music's role in shaping American perceptions of the Japanese, the influence of Japanese music on American composers, and the place of Japanese Americans in American musical life. Presenting numerous American encounters with and representations of Japanese music and Japan, this book reveals how music functions in exotic representation across a variety of genres and media, and how0Japanese music has at various times served as a sign of modernist experimentation, a sounding board for defining American music, and a tool for reshaping conceptions of race and gender. From the Tin Pan Alley songs of the Russo-Japanese war period to Weezer's Pinkerton album, music has continued to inscribe Japan as the land of extreme exoticism

Content: A look at race relations in the United States as seen through the prism of music from slavery to the present. Equal parts social history and pop culture, this book argues that no form of American music can be described as ethnically pure, and fleshes out the tug-of-war between blacks and whites as they create, recreate, and claim each innovation in popular music. Taking a thought-provoking look at how genres such as rock 'n' roll, rhythm 'n blues, jazz, blues, soul, country, and hip-hop emerged through changing times and the dynamic personalities that shaped them, author Kevin Phinney chronicles the history of American music through its succession of black and white composers, performers, and entrepreneurs who have stepped into the limelight with one set of rules in place and departed having transformed not only the music, but society as well. By using each era's greatest successes as a roadmap, he connects the signposts of America's musical evolution and societal shifts into a panoramic whole.--From publisher description.

Content: Kramer was one of the most visionary musical thinkers of the second half of the 20th century. In his The Time of Music, he approached the idea of the many different ways that time itself is articulated musically. This book has become influential among composers, theorists, and aestheticians. Now, in his almost completed text written before his untimely death in 2004, he examines the concept of postmodernism in music. Kramer created a series of markers by which we can identify postmodern works. He suggests that the postmodern project actually creates a radically different relationship between the composer and listener. Written with wit, precision, and at times playfully subverting traditional tropes to make a very serious point about this difference, Postmodern Music, Postmodern Listening leads us to a strongly grounded intellectual basis for stylistic description and an intuitive sensibility of what postmodernism in music entails. Postmodern Music, Postmodern Listening is an examination of how musical postmodernism is not just a style or movement, but a fundamental shift in the relationship between composer and listener. The result is a multifaceted and provocative look at a critical turning point in music history, one whose implications we are only just beginning to understand.
