Content: Ethics and International Affairs explores the extent and limits of contemporary international ethics and examines the ways in which the international community has responded to some of the most crucial challenges of the last ten years. At the center of the book is a discussion of how responsibility is viewed at individual, national, and international levels when facing the pressing problems of human rights, humanitarian intervention, environmental issues, considerations of gender, international economic justice, matters of war and peace, and the plight of refugees. While some authors revisit the very conception and interpretation of international ethics, others focus on the necessity to push for the better implementation and improvement of existing international norms. The result is an examination of how ethics are defined in today's specific contexts and how an understanding of the ethical may be developed from the articulation of the dilemmas encountered.

Content: "Recent years have seen increased scholarly and media interest in the movement of LGBTIQ persons, particularly those seeking protection in Europe and North America. While this has helped focus attention on the plight of individuals facing persecution, it has also reinvigorated racist tropes about sexual or gender rights in the Global South. In the case of Africa, the existence of anti-LGBTIQ laws and the prevalence of hetero-patriarchal discourses are regularly cited as evidence of the continent's inescapable savagery. Colonial notions of an uncivilised continent in need of salvation have been repackaged and repurposed for the twenty-first century, with LGBTIQ migrants serving as the ultimate case in point"

Content: Parts of Africa experience persistent violence and seemingly intractable confl icts. These generally have deep historical roots dating to colonial periods and before, and many of them have become more destructive in the post-Cold war period. These violent confl icts have drawn researchers seeking to determine and explain why con-fl icts are prevalent, what makes them intensify, and how confl icts can be resolved. However much of the literature on research methodology does not address the complexities of con-ducting research in the midst of violent confl ict and massive ethno-political disputes

Series Statement: Hexagon Series on Human and Environmental Security and Peace 4
Content: This policy-focused, global and multidisciplinary security handbook on Facing Global Environmental Change addresses new security threats of the 21st century posed by climate change, desertification, water stress, population growth and urbanization. These security dangers and concerns lead to migration, crises and conflicts. They are on the agenda of the UN, OECD, OSCE, NATO and EU. In 100 chapters, 132 authors from 49 countries analyze the global debate on environmental, human and gender, energy, food, livelihood, health and water security concepts and policy problems. In 10 parts they discuss the context and the securitization of global environmental change and of extreme natural and societal outcomes. They suggest a new research programme to move from knowledge to action, from reactive to proactive policies and to explore the opportunities of environ-mental cooperation for a new peace policy.
