Sonntag, 13. August 1961: Seit dem frühen Morgen wird mitten in Berlin das Straßenpflaster aufgerissen. Bauarbeiter beginnen damit, eine 43 Kilometer lange innerstädtische Mauer zu errichten. Fassungslos stehen sich die West-Berliner auf der einen, die Ost-Berliner und Bewohner des Umlandes auf der anderen Seite an der Sektorengrenze gegenüber. Eine ganze Stadt steht unter Schock. Die Bürger holen Fotoapparat und Filmkamera aus ihren Schränken und halten die Ereignisse im Bild fest. Fortan produzieren viele Berliner und Berlin-Besucher eigene Dokumentarfilme über das Leben in einer veränderten Stadt. Die Filmemacher Claus Oppermann und Gerald Grote haben aus mehr als 50 Stunden bislang unveröffentlichten privaten Schmalfilm-Aufnahmen diese atemberaubende Dokumentation zusammengestellt.
