Content: PRIDE' is a photography book capturing the parades and protests in the gay community, with publication set to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, which took place on June 28, 1969. On June 28, 1970, the first gay pride marches took place in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago commemorating the anniversary of the riots. Similar marches were organized in other cities-acting as both a celebration of gay culture and an activist movement for equal rights under the law. 0The book will be an inspiring visual history documenting the resilience of a marginalized group and their fight for civil rights. As gay rights in both America and the world have evolved, the scenes capturing the parade have as well-through signs, dress, and expressions of freedom and love, this book also tells the story of the ever-changing culture of a people. It is a book about celebration, oppression, hope, recognition, and, above all, pride in being who you are

Thompson und anderen Counterculture-Größen international bekannt. Diese Sammlung zeichnet diese turbulente Ära nach, in der Annie Leibovitz zu ihrem Signature Style fand und den Grundstein zu einer einzigartigen Karriere legte. Quelle: Verlag.

Content: "For the last fifty years, artists have explored the hidden operations of power and the symbiotic suspicion between the government and its citizens that haunts Western democracies. Everything Is Connected: Art and Conspiracy will be the first major exhibition to tackle this perennially provocative topic. It will trace the simultaneous development of two kinds of art about conspiracy. The first half of the exhibition will comprise works by artists who hew strictly to the public record, uncovering hidden webs of deceit--from the shell corporations used by New York's largest private landlord, interconnected networks encompassing politicians, businessmen, and arms dealers. In the second part, other artists will dive headlong into the fever dreams of the disaffected, creating fantastical works that nevertheless uncover uncomfortable truths in an age of information overload and weakened trust in institutions. Featuring seventy works by thirty artists in media ranging from painting and sculpture to photography, video, and installation art, from 1969 to 2016, Everything Is Connected: Art and Conspiracy will present an alternate history of postwar and contemporary art that is also an archaeology of our troubled times." -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website

Content: Francis Bacon is considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century. A major exhibition of his paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts in 2020 explores the role of animals in his work - not least the human animal. Having often painted dogs and horses, in 1969 Bacon first depicted bullfights. In this powerful series of works, the interaction between man and beast is dangerous and cruel, but also disturbingly intimate. Both are contorted in their anguished struggle and the erotic lurks not far away: "Bullfighting is like boxing," Bacon once said. "A marvellous aperitif to sex." Twenty-two years later, a lone bull was to be the subject of his final painting. In this fascinating publication - a significant addition to the literature on Bacon - expert authors discuss Bacon's approach to animals and identify his varied sources of inspiration, which included surrealist literature and the photographs of Eadweard Muybridge. They contend that, by depicting animals in states of vulnerability, anger and unease, Bacon sought to delve into the human condition. Exhibition: Royal Academy of Arts, London, UK (22.01-12.04.2021)

Content: "Chryssa & New York offers a timely reassessment of Greek-born artist Chryssa (Chryssa Vardea-Mavromichali, 1933–2013). Chryssa was a leading figure in the postwar New York art world and in the use of signage, text, and neon, yet her work, which bridges Pop, Conceptual, and Minimalist approaches to art making, remains under-recognized. Focusing on the artist’s early career, in particular her time in New York from the 1950s to the 1970s, this book charts the emergence of her singular aesthetic, especially her formal innovations with neon, and culminates in the development of her monumental and rarely seen installation The Gates to Times Square (1964–66). Essays situate Chryssa’s art alongside that of other New York-based practitioners in the 1950s and 1960s, consider her work through the lenses of queer theory and the Greek diaspora, and uncover her crucial influence on light art today. Rounding out the volume, a conversation on the technical aspects of her practice and a comprehensive chronology make this the definitive publication on Chryssa for years to come."--Distributor's website
Content: "The first major publication about Chryssa in more than thirty years, this volume reintroduces the Greek-born artist to a new generation of scholars and art lovers alike. Focusing on her early career, in particular her time in New York in the late 1950s, the book charts the emergence of her singular aesthetic, especially her formal innovations with neon, and culminates in the development of her monumental and rarely seen installation The Gates to Times Square (1966). Curator Michelle White sets the stage in a formal reading of Chryssa's art, contextualizing it through the work of other New York-based practitioners in the 1950s and '60s, with particular attention to the influence of the group of artists living and working in New York's Coenties Slip neighborhood during that era. Jonathan D. Katz, associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, considers Chryssa's work with-and strategic destruction of-letters, analyzing her practice through the lenses of Structuralism and queer theory. Independent scholar Kalliopi Minioudaki contextualizes the artist's work within that of the Greek diaspora and its centuries-long visual languages and traditions. Albright-Knox assistant curator Tina Rivers Ryan uses The Gates and other light works by Chryssa as case studies to uncover her crucial influence on the legacy of light art today. Artist Tiona Nekkia McClodden and author Lisa Cohen, respectively, respond experimentally to the problems of biography and the archive and think through Chryssa's queerness in relation to her work. A conversation between Matt Dilling, fabricator at Lite Brite Neon, and Joy Bloser, Menil conservator, sheds light on the technical aspects of the artist's practice. A comprehensive chronology by curator Megan Holly Witko makes this the definitive publication on Chryssa for years to come"--

Content: "Recalling a charcoal she made in 1916, Georgia O'Keeffe later wrote, "I have made this drawing several times--never remembering that I had made it before--and not knowing where the idea came from." These drawings, and the majority of O'Keeffe's works in charcoal, watercolor, pastel and graphite, belong to series in which she develops and transforms motifs that lie between observation and abstraction. In the formative years of 1915 to 1918, she made as many works on paper as she would in the next 40 years, producing sequences in watercolor of abstract lines, organic landscapes and nudes, along with charcoal drawings she would group according to the designation "specials." While her practice turned increasingly toward canvas in subsequent decades, important series on paper reappeared--including charcoal flowers of the 1930s, portraits of the 1940s and aerial views of the 1950s."--Harvard Bookstore website (viewed on April 12, 2023)
