Content: In 1929, F. W. Murnau (Nosferatu, Faust, Sunrise), one of the greatest of all film directors, invited leading documentarist Robert Flaherty (Nanook of the North, Man of Aran) to collaborate on a film to be shot on location in Tahiti, a Polynesian idyll in which Murnau imagined a cast of island actors would provide a new form of authentic drama and offer rare insight into their "primitive" culture. The result of their collaboration was Tabu, a film that depicts the details of indigenous island life to tell a mythical tale that is rich in the universal themes of desire and loss. Subtitled A Story of the South Seas, Tabu concerns a Tahitian fisherman (played by an islander, Matahi) and his love for a young woman (played by fellow islander Reri, who went on to star on Broadway) whose body has been consecrated to the gods, rendering her tabu as far as mortal men are concerned. The lovers flee their island and its restrictive traditions, but will their love prevail in the ̮civilisedŁ world? This Oscar-winning film (the Academy Award went to cinematographer Floyd Crosby) is both poetic and simple in tone. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present - completely uncensored and fully restored - this landmark film of rare exoticism and magical beauty, described by critic Lotte Eisner in 1931 as ̮the apogee of the art of the silent filmŁ, for the first time ever on Blu-ray in its original aspect ratio. (Eureka)

Content: „Forever granted a place in cinematic history by winning the first ever Academy Award for Best Picture in 1927 and the only silent film to do so, William Wellman’s silent epic Wings is more than an Oscar® winner, but an epic story of friendship with the type of thrilling action only practical effects can imagine… Hometown best friends Jack (Charles “Buddy” Rogers) and David (Richard Arlen) compete for the affection of a gorgeous dame (Jobyna Ralston), though Jack doesn’t realise that girl next door Mary Preston (Clara Bow) has eyes for him as well. But World War I is soon upon them, so the boys are off to France to fight against the Germans. Meanwhile, Mary follows Jack into enemy lines as a nurse. Wellman’s epic drama combines the most spectacular of stunts with the most classical of melodrama, along with one of Bow’s greatest performances and the screen debut of Gary Cooper. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present this American classic in a beautiful new restoration on Blu-ray and DVD for the first time in the UK.” (Covertext)

Content: Taiwanese auteur Hou Hsiao-hsien followed up his highly acclaimed Coming of Age trilogy of films with "Daughter of the Nile", a rich and poignant drama about a young woman struggling to support her family amidst the violent and neon-soaked milieu of 1980's Taipei. Lin (Lin Hsiao-yang) works as a waitress in a fried chicken restaurant, attends night school and pines after her brother's friend, local gigolo Ah-sang (Fan Yang). Increasingly constrained by the casual brutality of the world around her, Lin finds escape imagining herself as the titular Daughter of the Nile, a character from her favourite manga series. Based on the personal experiences of screenwriter, Chu Tien-wen "Daughter of the Nile" is a profoundly moving observation of marginalised youth. [Cover]

Content: The third feature film by cinema master Michelangelo Antonioni, La signora senza camelie [The Lady Without Camelias], expanded the expressive palette of contemporary Italian movies, demonstrating that a personal vision could take an explicitly poetic tack; that ̮seriousness = neo-realismŁ was perhaps already turning into something of a truism; and that Antonioni would answer to no-one but himself. It's the story of a shopclerk named Clara (played by the captivating Lucia Bosè, also of Antonioni's brilliant debut feature, Cronaca di un amore) who finds a chance casting in a small movie role develop into a full-blown career as screen-siren. Tension erupts when her husband can no longer tolerate watching her frivolous cinema escapades, and pushes her into a "serious, artistic" production of the life of Joan of Arc whereupon she is castigated by the critical establishment. A riveting "behind-the-scenes" show-business drama, La signora senza camelie explores themes that would haunt its director from L'avventura through La notte and The Passenger ̶ an individual's tenuous hold on her identity, and the dangers inherent to performance in life and on-screen. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Antonioni's masterful, highly personal La signora senza camelie for the first time in the UK ̶ in a Dual Format release containing both Blu-ray and DVD versions of the film. Content: Named one of the ten best British films of the century by the British Film Institute, Ken Loach's Kes, is cinema's quintessential portrait of working-class Northern England. Billy (an astonishingly naturalistic David Bradley) is a fifteen-year-old miner's son whose close bond with a wild kestrel provides him with a spiritual escape from his dead-end life. Kes brought to the big screen the sociopolitical engagement Loach had established in his work for the BBC, and pushed the British "angry young man" film of the sixties into a new realm of authenticity, using real locations and nonprofessional actors. Loach's poignant coming-of-age drama remains the now legendary director's most beloved and influential film. (Criterion)

[Film-Dienst]
