Series Statement: Studia in Veteris Testamenti pseudepigrapha v. 15
Note: For many centuries, the acts and destinies of the first-created human beings, Adam and Eve, have intrigued artists, story-tellers and theologians alike. This volume is a collection of articles on these traditions, written by some of the foremost scholars in the field. The volume consists of two parts. In the first part G.A. Anderson and M.E. Stone have combined a number of studies on the rich variety of Adam and Eve-traditions, from the Life of Adam and Eve onwards to late medieval writings in Armenian. The second part, edited by Johannes Tromp, consists of papers read at the 1998 Leiden symposium, and deals more specifically with the Life of Adam and Eve , The penitence narrative in the Life of Adam and Eve / Gary A. Series Statement: Perspectives on Southern Africa 48
Content: David Attwell defends the literary and political integrity of the South African novelist J. M. Coetzee, arguing that he has absorbed the textual turn of postmodern culture while still addressing his nation's ethical crisis. As a form of "situational metafiction," Coetzee's novels are shown to reconstruct and critique some of the key discourses in the history of colonialism and apartheid from the eighteenth century to the present. While self-conscious about fiction-making, Coetzee's work takes seriously the condition of the society in which it is produced. Attwell begins by describing the intellectual and political contexts of Coetzee's fiction. He proceeds with a developmental analysis of the corpus of six novels, drawing on Coetzee's other writings in stylistics, literary criticism, translation, political journalism, and popular culture. Attwell's elegantly written analysis deals both with Coetzee's subversion of the dominant culture around him and with his ability to grasp the complexities of giving voice to the anguish of South Africa.

Content: "Demonstrating the central role played by the stylistic features of online news in shaping cultural representations of people and places, this book highlights how these features share in constructing meaning. Taking the 2016 terror attack in Nice, France as a case study, Ashley Riggs analyses online news coverage of the attack from the UK, Spain and Switzerland, three distinct linguistic and cultural spaces. An innovative mixed-methods approach, including content analysis and elements of translation criticism and comparative stylistics, is used to analyse this corpus to reveal the frequency and influence of stylistic devices found in online news and explore how they help to shape reader interpretations. Drawing conclusions about linguistic and journalistic practices by place and interrogating the notions of 'European identity' and 'European journalism', Stylistic Deceptions in Online News reveals how stylistic features vary according to both political leanings and national and regional contexts, and the influence these have upon readers."

Series Statement: Routledge advances in translation and interpreting studies 63
Content: "This book explores the growing tension between multilingualism and monolingualism in the European Union in the wake of Brexit, underpinned by the interplay between the rise of English as a lingua franca and the low status of translations in EU bodies, agencies and institutions. The book draws on an interdisciplinary approach highlighting insights from such fields as sociolinguistics, translation studies, and philosophy of language in looking at data drawn from official EU documents and online resources, many of which are increasingly initially produced in English and then translated into other languages, but not published as translations. In analyzing this data further, Leal explores issues around language hierarchy and the growing difficulty in reconciling the EU's approach to promoting multilingualism while fostering monolingualism in practice through the widespread use of English as a lingua franca, as well as questions around authenticity in the translation process and the boundaries between source texts and translations. The volume also looks ahead at the current and future implications of Brexit regarding this tension while also proposing potential ways forward toward resolving it. Offering unique insights into contemporary debates in translation studies, this book will be of particular interest to students and scholars in translation studies, sociolinguistics, philosophy of language and political science"
