Content: Is it permissible to kill an innocent person against her will in order to prevent several other innocent persons from being killed against their will? The answer to which this essay comes after extensive discussion is - under certain conditions and limitations - affirmative. On the way to this answer, the book offers a comprehensive in-depth discussion of so-called deontic restrictions - that is, the idea of an action's being prohibited in circumstances in which performing it once would be the only way to prevent its being performed multiple times. The book's leading question is whether there is a plausible rationale for deontic restrictions. To this effect, a taxonomy and critical discussions of the most important approaches to justify deontic restrictions are provided - where many of these approaches undergo a deeper examination for the first time ever. In addition, the book clarifies some adjoining questions, such as why deontic restrictions are often perceived as being problematic or how the concept of agent-relativity should best be understood and formalized. Put into broader perspective, the conclusions offered should have a bearing on a number of debates in normative ethics, not least on the debate between deontologists and consequentialist

Content: Best known for his collaborations with Bertolt Brecht, composer Hanns Eisler also set nineteenth-century German poetry to music that both absorbs and disturbs the Lieder tradition. This book traces Eisler's art songs (German: Kunstlieder) through twentieth-century political crises from World War I to Nazi-era exile and from Eisler's postwar deportation from the U.S. to the ideological pressures he faced in the early German Democratic Republic. His art songs are presented not as an escape from the "dark times" Brecht lamented but rather as a way to intervene in the nationalist appropriation of aesthetic material. The book follows a chronological arc from Eisler's early Morgenstern songs to his Lied-like setting of Brecht's 1939 "To Those Who Come After" and his treatment of Hölderlin's poetry in the 1940s Hollywood Songbook; the final two chapters focus on Eisler's Goethe settings in the early GDR, followed by his late Serious Songs recalling Brahms in their reflective approach. In its combination of textual and musicological analysis, this book balances technical and lay vocabulary to reach readers with or without musical background. The author's practical perspective as a singer also informs the book, as she addresses not only what Eisler asks of the voice but also the challenge of evoking both intimacy and distance in his politically fraught art songs. Heidi Hart holds a PhD in German Studies from Duke University. She is an instructor in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Utah State University.

Content: At the end of the 5th millennium BCE, some of the vastest settlements of the time emerged on the forest steppe north of the Black Sea. The largest of these sites were found between the Southern Bug and Dnieper river. There they occur only tens of kilometres apart and are assumed to be partly coeval. The Trypillia 'mega-sites' reached sizes of up to 320 hectares with up to 3000 buildings in one place. During their peak times as many as 11,000 people could have lived in one of those settlements. But how did people come together in these Trypillia 'mega-sites' with several thousand dwellings? How long were such sites inhabited, and how many people lived there? Were these settlements the first towns, preceding the Mesopotamian development? To address these questions, this book presents the results of the investigations at the Maidanets'ke 'mega-site'.To date, Maidanets'ke represents the most complex of these enormous sites and is also among the best investigated ones. Based on new excavations by international teams, the settlement's history, its structure and regional context are addressed. The excavation results, with features like a pottery production site, a causewayed enclosure and several dwellings, are presented in detail. An extensive radiocarbon dating program conducted on various parts of the site, in combination with pottery studies, revealed several phases of continuous occupation between 3990-3640 cal BCE. According to the number of contemporary structures, the demography of a 'mega-site' is reconstructed in detail for the first time.Targeted geophysical surveys in the core area of the 'mega-site' phenomenon show that exceptional non-inhabited buildings and so-called mega-structures occur regularly in both larger and smaller settlements. Overall, the Trypillia settlement system appears scalable, with small sites being structurally similar

Content: "In a dispute, governments weigh up their options when selecting between various dispute settlement mechanisms. By scrutinising the interaction of institutional design with state interests, Forum Shopping in International Disputes analyses why particular forums are selected in maritime boundary disputes. The act of forum shopping, it argues, is more than the identification of the forum most likely to award a favourable decision. Rather, other interests come into play, such as concerns about domestic standing and the wish to draw international attention to a case. In other words, the best forum in a given dispute is the one that conforms most closely to a government's overarching policy. This book is especially notable for its use of qualitative case studies, a much-needed contribution to the growing body of research on forum selection, and for its detailed actor-centred approach, which comparatively assesses the merits of available forums. Focusing on the UN system, it provides an account of why states sometimes call on the Security Council and at other times prefer the International Court of Justice. "--

Uniform Title: Transgressing boundaries? Jesuits, astrology and culture in Portugal (1590-1759)
Content: "Connections between the Society of Jesus and astrology used to appear as unexpected at best. Astrology was never viewed favourably by the Church, especially in early modern times, and since Jesuits were strong defenders of Catholic orthodoxy, most historians assumed that their religious fervour would be matched by an equally strong rejection of astrology. This groundbreaking and compelling study brings to light new Jesuit scientific texts revealing a much more positive, practical, and nuanced attitude. What emerges forcefully is a totally new perspective into early modern Jesuit culture, science, and education, highlighting the element that has been long overlooked: astrology"--

Content: Innovation managers and innovation scholars increasingly emphasize the open innovation model, introduced by Henry Chesbrough in 2003. This model postulates that the innovation process should be flexible and cross organizational boundaries, which enables the transfer of knowledge and capabilities between organizations. However, until now, it remained unclear which types of firms apply open innovation, whether it realy raises their performance, and how this can be managed in the best way. This book addresses the important issue how innovative firms profit from external knowledge to improve their innovation performance. Using large scale empirical evidence from the Dutch industry, this book shows that especially Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) and firms from low-tech sectors have increasingly adopted open innovation strategies over the period 1994-2004, and are clearly catching up large and high-tech firms. The results indicate that firms pursuing an open innovation strategy perform better with regard to innovation than firms that innovate exclusively in-house. In contrast to the common opinion that large Mergers & Acquisitions (M&As) are bad for innovation, it turns out that M&As have a positive impact on long-term innovation performance. In times of economic cricis this can be an extra argument for governments to back large scale M&As. Large (medium) high-tech M&As in the life sciences industry were analysed in-depth, to investigate the dynamics of post M&A integration. This book shows the different types of innovation synergies that can be expected from M&As and how they can be realized by systematic post M&A integration. Finally, this book studies how innovation brokers fulfill essential roles in innovation networks of SMEs in the agri-food sector. It provides guidelines for managers in innovation networks to improve the performance of these networks

Uniform Title: Hospitals and deaths in the Northeast of France during the Middle ages and Modern times : archeo-anthropological analysis of hospital cemeteries
Content: The story of medieval and modern hospitals remained for a long time the privilege of the historians and the art historians. Their works have delivered numerous informations, both on their charitable vocation and on their financial organization, also helping to understand the details of the everyday life. The recent discovery of several Hospital cemeteries led to us to start by contemplating this study in a transdisciplinary way and by including an archeo-anthropological reflection, to answer questions, which until then remained unsolved. These specific funeral contexts have, up to now never been studied. Our main objectives were to try to characterize at best the subjects welcomed in hospitals, by analyzing both the funeral practice and biology. Our research focused on four medieval and modern sites of the northeast of France. Our study showed that certain characteristics were similar from one cemetery to another, particularly the funeral practice and recruitment. The first ones indeed remain rather simple, without particular structure like sarcophagus or vault. The buried appear to be similar from a site to another, with a weak number of children and a sanitary state which does not differ from what was discovered in other contexts. The presence of multiple graves on three of these sites (Troyes, Verdun and Epinal) permitted us to acknowledge evidence of a few major crisis, and thus understand the difference in the management of such an event by a medieval hospital or by a modern one

Uniform Title: Representations and functions of the exile from Spain to France and the economic emigration to Germany during the XXth century in spanish literature of the XXIst century
Content: This work means to study the representations that are illustrated in novels about the exile from Spain to France and about economic emigration (1960-1970) to France and especially to Germany. Those themes have been mostly dealt with in Spanish literature since the Javier Cercas’ best seller publication, Soldados de Salamina. Javier Cercas greatly influenced the narratives about exile and emigration thanks to such use as investigation method for example. Those works afford an essential additional information with regard to historians research on exile and emigration. Finally, these narrative representations, sometimes in harmony and other times in discrepancy concerning those found in previous literature, aim at the same purpose: understanding the present immigration to Spain, and therefore, understanding the Other and their own identity

Content: Dating advertisements having greathly increased are a reliable source of material for social sciences research studies. Through the presentation of the self and the descritpion of the other appearing in the advertisements the dominant models of feminity and masculinity emerge. In our research we compared the advertisements published intwo different societies (russian and french) at two different times (1994 and 1997). The principal results of our study show that the way in which the advertiser describes himself as an individual and the way in which he describes the sexual roles are shaped by the models which the society puts at his disposal. In this manner, the individual tries to create the best impression for the other by reproducing the socially enhanced model. We also illustrate that the radical social change necessarily causes a transformation in the images of the sexual roles and this is particulary flagrant in the portrayal of the female
