Ein neuer Blick auf drei Generationen deutsches und österreichisches Regietheate. Das Wort Regietheater polarisiert seit über einhundert Jahren: die Menschen auf und hinter der Bühne, die Zuschauer und die Kritiker. Die konservative Gruppe, die an Bewährtem festhalten will, führt die Werktreue im Munde, ein zentraler Begriff in der Diskussion darüber, was Regietheater darf und was nicht. Das vorliegende Werk erlaubt eine ganz neue Sicht auf das deutsche Regietheater und damit auf das deutsche und österreichische Theater allgemein: Üblicherweise wird vor allem der 1968er Generation, vertreten durch Peter Zadek, Claus Peymann und Peter Stein, das Monopol des Regietheaters zugeschrieben, als sei es ihre Erfindung. Doch: Bereits 1919 entfachte sich eine der heftigsten Diskussionen um dieses Thema, als Leopold Jessner den Wilhelm Tell von Friedrich Schiller inszenierte - ohne die bis dahin selbstverständliche pittoreske Alpenkulisse.
