Abstract:
Introduction: In Belgium as in other countries, the needs of informal caregivers are gaining increased attention. They perform various tasks, often complex, to help, accompany and regularly or continuously support a sick or dependent loved one. Today, their investment is only partially recognized. Objectives: Beyond a work of societal and political sensitization, we aimed to look at how health professionals in pediatrics could earlier provide support to the caregivers, in a sustainable way in order to treat or even prevent their exhaustion. Methods: In this work, our aim was to conduct a participatory research to co-construct an innovative project in the health system in partnership with all the actors concerned. This research took place in Wallonia (Belgium) over a period of 2 years. Results: The main results reflect the perception of professionals and parental caregivers on their needs and their potential expectations, such as a panel of coordinated services, taking into account their emerging need of identity, that could be fulfilled by therapeutic education workshops. Discussion: To benefit from respite care, parents must preliminarily be supported in a process of reflection regarding their identity as parents and caregivers. Conclusion: This research develops a new approach, decentered from the illness or the sick child and centered on the parental caregiver.
