Inhalt: Die vorliegende Arbeit geht von der Überlegung aus, daß zu den Charakteristika einer Sprache auch die Häufigkeit der syntaktischen Konstruktionen gehört und daß sich syntaktischer Wandel folglich weniger im Ersatz alter Konstruktionen durch neue äußert als vielmehr in einem Wandel der Vorkommenshäufigkeit der miteinander konkurrierenden Konstruktionen; d.h. syntaktischer Wandel erfolgt primär nicht auf der Ebene der langue, sondern auf der Ebene der Norm. Gegenstand der Untersuchung sind 42 romanische Übersetzungen der ersten vierzehn Kapitel von Titus Livius' "Ab Urbe condita" in sechs Sprachen und aus sieben Jahrhunderten (1323 bis heute), denn Übersetzungen bieten auf Grund des immer gleichen Textes die beste Grundlage für vergleichende Untersuchungen zur Vorkommenshäufigkeit bestimmter Phänomene. Die Untersuchung ist diachron und synchron-sprachvergleichend ausgerichtet und gilt der Konkurrenz zwischen finiten und infiniten Konstruktionen in den verschiedenen Satzfunktionen. Für zwölf repräsentative Texte werden die quantitativen Daten in Tabellen zusammengestellt und analysiert; die Ergebnisse werden durch die Interpretation ausgewählter Sätze auf der Grundlage aller Übersetzungen illustriert, kritisch bewertet und vertieft. Diesem Hauptteil der Arbeit gehen theoretisch-methodologische Überlegungen (Kapitel 1) und eine Vorstellung der Übersetzungen (Kapitel 2) voraus. Eine Synopse von 42 romanischen Übersetzungen der Kapitel 1-14 des ersten Buchs der ersten Dekade von "Ab Urbe condita" beschließt die Arbeit.

Inhalt: The study proceeds on the conviction that one of the characteristics of the syntax of a language is the relative frequency with which syntactic constructions occur. 42 translations of the early chapters of Titus Livius' "Ab Urbe condita" into 6 Romance languages from 1323 to the present day are examined from the point of view of the differential incidence of the use of finite and non-finite constructions to express various sentence functions in the languages and epochs under consideration. The data on the construction frequency established in twelve representative texts is presented in table form and subjected to diachronic and synchronic/comparative analysis. This analysis is illustrated, critically evaluated and enriched by an interpretation of the way selected sentences are rendered in the translations. The study proper is prefaced by a discussion of the relevant theoretical and methodological problems and introductory information on the translations. The volume closes with a synopsis of the translation texts.
