Das Buch ist eine Gesamtinterpretation von Musils Roman „Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften“ mit dem Fokus auf dessen gesellschaftsanalytische Leistung. Es stützt sich auf Pierre Bourdieus Konzept einer Sozioanalyse literarischer Texte, das durch Anleihen aus der Diskurs-, Erzähl-, Gender- und Medientheorie ergänzt sowie durch Befunde der Sozial- und Kulturgeschichtsschreibung empirisch gesättigt wird. "Überzeugend legt Wolf schließlich dar, inwiefern Musil mittels seines innovativen essayistischen Erzählverfahrens den Versuch einer Überwindung der Aporien des zeitgenössischen literarischen Feldes unternahm. Musils soziale Laufbahn, die sich durch eine Frontstellung gegen die extremen ideologischen Positionen seiner Zeit auszeichnet und auf dieser Opposition eine negative Anthropologie aufbaut, wird als Voraussetzung der im Roman entwickelten Welt greifbar. Es ist eine Welt am Rande der Katastrophe, wie sie im ersten Kapitel schon ein plötzlicher Autounfall gleichsam präfiguriert. Wolfs immens kenntnisreiche Monografie ist auch als Einführung in Musils Werk lesbar.
