Frido war Opas Liebling (Sohn von Thomas Manns Jüngstem Michael); als "göttliches Kind" Echo literarisierte er ihn in seinem "Faustus". Aber das war anscheinend für Frido kein Segen: früh schon beäugt, neugierig bestaunt, von "Trophäenjägern" umlauert. Fridos weiteres Leben jedenfalls gleicht einer vielartig gefährdeten Achterbahnfahrt (in Amerika und der "Kulturheimat Europa"): Musikstudium, Theologiepromotion, Psychologiediplom, Medizinstudium, literarische Versuche (vgl. zuletzt BA 12/00). Diese Bilanz des unruhigen Lebens eines irgendwie stigmatisierten Erben gibt sich als Rechenschaftsbericht, ist oft tagebuchartig sehr persönlich (mit eingeschobenen alten Texten aus Briefen, Vorträgen u.a.), spiegelt einen Selbstfindungsprozess, der noch keinesfalls abgeschlossen scheint. Vielleicht also ein Dokument für klinische Psychologen? Mann war einschlägig tätig. Letztlich eine Auseinandersetzung mit sich selbst als einer Romanfigur des Großvaters: sicher ehrlich gemeint, gut zu lesen, mit interessanten Familienfotos - doch von größerer öffentlicher Relevanz?
