Diese Studie unterzieht die heterogenen Erzählwelten im 'Wigalois' Wirnts von Grafenberg (um 1210/20) mit Hilfe moderner kulturwissenschaftlicher Methoden einer grundlegenden Neuuntersuchung. Das besondere Augenmerk gilt der Kommunikation des Helden auf seinen Reisestationen, den dort zum Einsatz kommenden Ritualen und Symbolen sowie ihrer narrativen Vermittlung. Neben einer genauen Textanalyse werden dabei spezifische literarische und außerliterarische Kontexte, die über zeitgenössische Denkstrukturen Auskunft geben, zur Parallellektüre herangezogen. Auf dieser Grundlage eröffnen sich neue Perspektiven hinsichtlich einer sinnvollen Gesamtinterpretation des Werkes und seiner Struktur, die von früheren deutschsprachigen Artusromanen erheblich abweicht.
