Die Essays dieses Bandes befassen sich mit jüdischen Schriftstellern im mitteleuropäischen Raum: Walter Benjamin, Stefan Zweig, Elias Canetti, Lion Feuchtwanger, Theodor Herzl, Abraham Joshua Heschel und Vilém Flusser – und mit jeweiligen ‚Durchgängen‘. Es geht um mythische und utopische, verlorene oder in Frage gestellte Orte, die einerseits in Mitteleuropa lokalisiert sind, sich aber andererseits auch nirgendwo befinden. Es geht um ein „literarisiertes“, vielleicht um ein fiktionalisiertes jüdisches Mitteleuropa, das manchmal auch in ganz konkret erkennbaren Zügen sichtbar wird. Die Beiträge gewähren damit auch Einblick in die Diversität und den kulturellen Reichtum des mitteleuropäischen Judentums der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts.
