Im allgemeinen gilt Goethe für den deutschen Sprachraum nach wie vor als der Begründer einer deutschen Novellistik, obwohl vermehrt darauf hingewiesen wird, daß es bereits vor ihm Erzähltexte gab, die als Novellen eingestuft werden können. Was theoretisch nicht reflektiert oder zumindest nicht als Phänomen erkannt wurde, wird suggeriert, gab es im deutschsprachigen Raum nicht. Diese Arbeit zeigt, daß in der großen Lücke zwischen 1353, dem Jahr, in dem Boccaccio sein Decameron und damit die erste große nachantike europäische Novellensammlung vollendete, und 1795, dem Erscheinungsjahr von Goethe
