"Vom Mittelalter bis ins 21. Jahrhundert haben Künstler das Thema 'Totentanz' gestaltet. Der um 1463 von Bernd Notke gemalte Totentanz in der Marienkirche zu Lübeck gehörte zu den eindrucksvollsten Beispielen. Er verbrannte in der Nacht vom 28. auf den 29. März 1942 beim Bombenangriff auf Lübeck. Erstmalig haben hier nun 25 Künstlerinnen und Künstler in sehr direkter Weise auf den zerstörten Lübecker Totentanz reagiert, indem sie mit künstlerischen Mitteln auf die in einem Buch [Der Todtentanz in der Marienkirche zu Lübeck / nach einer Zeichn. von C. J. Milde. Mit erl. Text von W. Mantels. Lübeck : Rahtgens, 1866] erhalten gebliebenen Reproduktionen geantwortet haben." (Rückseite des hinteren Buchdeckels)
