In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde das damalige System der Ausbildung von Musikern stark in Frage gestellt. Auch Richard Wagner beteiligte sich daran. Er erhoffte sich 1865 durch den Bau einer deutschen Musikschule in München eine deutliche Verbesserung der musikalischen Zustände. Die von ihm geplante Musikschule sollte nicht nur neue Wege in der Ausbildung für Sänger gehen, sondern auch die Entwicklung eines deutschen Aufführungsstils vorantreiben. Mit Hilfe der geplanten Ausbildungsanstalt galt es den vermeintlich zu starken musikalischen Einfluss Italiens und Frankreichs zurückzudrängen. Ziel dieses Buches ist es, Wagners Vorstellungen über den Aufbau und die Ziele einer Musikschule darzustellen und zu erläutern. Um den Bericht besser aus seiner Entstehungszeit heraus verstehen zu können, werden die Aussagen Wagners mit den Auffassungen seiner Zeitgenossen in Beziehung gesetzt.
