Carl (vgl. zuletzt "Der Himmel über New York") ist eine reisefreudige Autorin und kennt Taormina, wo sie ihren Roman über die Innenansichten einer Ehe verortet hat. Das gibt der Geschichte Momente starker Atmosphären und Naturbeschreibungen. Der Fokus der Handlung liegt auf der nicht schleichenden, sondern durch den Ortswechsel schockartigen Entfremdung der Eheleute. Anna fühlt sich hingezogen zu Alexander und seiner Frau, die scheinbar die Lebensrealität haben, von der sie immer geträumt hat. Carl versteht es geschickt, das Unbehagen, das Unausgesprochene in der Schwebe zu halten. Dies ist kein spektakulärer Roman, sondern einer, der von tektonischen Verschiebungen in Beziehungen erzählt, und wie diese Krisen überwunden werden können
