Content: A considerable amount of writing has been published on Japan at war in the Second World War, and more recently scholars have been revisiting the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–5; whereas this volume strives to examine Japan’s twentieth-century approach to war and militarism in a wider perspective, bringing hitherto unexamined new themes and subject-matter under scrutiny up to the present day. Among the topics covered are the February 26 Incident in Theatre and Film, Ethnicity and Gender in Wartime Japanese Revue Theatre, Military Festivals and the Japanese Self-Defence Forces, Major Trends in Japanese Treatment of POWs in Modern Times, and Japan’s ‘Tug of War’after the Russian War. Published to mark the distinguished academic career of Ben-Ami Shillony, who retired in 2006, this volume also offers valuable new insights into the theme of the Japanese and the Jews, including the Story and Myth of Anne Frank and Sadako Sasaki, the involvement of Jewish scientists in the making of the atomic bomb, and Japan’s Jewish Policy in the late 1930s

Content: As the complicated relationship between music and theatre has evolved and changed in the modern and postmodern periods, music has continued to be immensely influential in key developments of theatrical practices. In this study musicality in the theatre, David Roesner offers a revised view of the nature of the relationship. The new perspective results from two shifts in focus: on the one hand, Roesner concentrates in particular on theatre-making - that is the creation processes of theatre - on the other, he traces a notion of 'musicality' in the historical and contemporary discourses as driver of theatrical innovation and aesthetic dispositif, focusing on musical qualities, metaphors and principles derived from a wide range of genres.Roesner looks in particular at the ways in which those who attempted to experiment with, advance or even revolutionize theatre often sought to use and integrate a sense of musicality in training and directing processes and in performances. His study reveals both the continuous changes in the understanding of music as model, method and metaphor for the theatre and how different notions of music had a vital impact on theatrical innovation in the past 150 years. Musicality thus becomes a complementary concept to theatricality, helping to highlight what is germane to an art form as well as to explain its traction in other art forms and areas of life. The theoretical scope of the book is developed from a wide range of case studies, some of which are re-readings of the classics of theatre history (Appia, Meyerhold, Artaud, Beckett), while others introduce or rediscover less-discussed practitioners such as Joe Chaikin, Thomas Bernhard, Elfriede Jelinek, Michael Thalheimer and Karin Beier.
Note: Introduction: premises and promises; Appia - musicality and the 'inner essence'; Meyerhold - theatre 'organized according to the music's laws'; Artaud - the musicality of sound, voice and noise; Writing with your ears - the musicality of playwriting; Theatre and jazz; The eclectic musicality of now; Conclusion; bibliography; Index.

Content: "Acting the Essence examines the theory, practice and history of the art of the performer from the perspective of its inner nature as work on oneself, within, around and beyond the pedagogy of the actor. Reflecting primarily on the legacy of Jerzy Grotowski, this book is composed of a series of reflections on the Stanislavskian lineage of practitioners and related authors, in an attempt to renovate awareness of the original path traced by the Russian master and to refine certain ambiguities in contemporary training. In a new media age of image and sound, accompanied by a proliferation of new technologies and means to communicate, emphasised by the COVID-19 crisis, a classical question comes to interrogate us again: what is the essence and the principal objective of the work of the performer? Is performing art still necessary? While proposing a theoretical advancement of the discipline and an historical overview of the relevant practices, this book provides tools for a better understanding of the traditional function of the performer's practice as work on the self, for its ecological renaissance through a conscient use of trance, attention and altered states of consciousness. This book offers insight for students in Drama, Theatre, and Performance courses studying acting and performance at university"--

Content: "The Stage Director's Prompt Book is a step-by-step, detailed guide on how to create a practical and powerful rehearsal and performance tool - the director's prompt book. A prompt book is a coordinating and organizational tool for the stage director. This book systematizes the creative process the director uses to analyze and interpret a play and coordinates all director-related rehearsal and production activities into a single, self-contained interpretive and organizational system. The book guides the director through the necessary steps and stages of creating and using a prompt book-from play analysis and interpretation, through the formation of a dynamic and theatrical director's vision, to a unique method of physicalizing a play in production. A prompt book of a one-act play is included in the book as a complete example of the system. Such techniques as redlining, color coding and creating a three-column left-hand page are vividly illustrated for readers, allowing them to assemble their own prompt books. In a clear and example-driven format, The Stage Director's Prompt Book offers a system of directorial interpretation that takes the director through a series of point-by point instructions to construct a strong, effective and creative instrument for success. For the undergraduate and graduate student of theatre directing, stage management and producing courses, along with aspiring professional directors, this book provides an interactive and intuitive approach to personalize the stage directing experience and assemble a graphically dynamic and creative director's prompt book"--
